Becky and Millie had no idea how long they entertained the lonesome ghosts, for spirits play in a framework of time beyond human conception.
After that, came the familiar spirits, ghosts from the girls' family history. These presented themselves in no particular order, keyed by memories from picture albums, scrapbooks, bedtime stories, chance references, and, occasionally, books that had been written about them.
One great-great-grandfather appeared with two leather bandoleers, full of bullets strung across his chest. Another distant relative seemed to be a faint blue image posing in front of an enormous mural he had painted on commission.
