Genesis
Both Gran and my mother cried out at the same time as a wolf latched onto Gran's arm, its fangs sinking deep.
My mind made up, the choice agonizing but clear, I closed my eyes and gathered the magic I needed, drawing it from every fiber of my being, a raw, burning wellspring. When I opened them again, the room was covered in a terrifying red film, and I knew the color of my eyes had changed, reflecting the dangerous power within me. I snaked my magic toward each of the wolves, a crimson tendril, and encased them in it, a suffocating embrace. They all thrashed about wildly when they realized they were immobile, trapped in an invisible vise, their roars turning into desperate whimpers.
