My reflection in the glass didn’t look like mine at all—my eyes glowed faintly, my lips parted as though whispering a name I didn’t remember learning. The wards trembled. The Academy was stitched together with old magic, its bones laced with the founders’ blood, its heart bound by runes carved into the earth itself. I could feel them now, those invisible threads, wrapping around towers and classrooms, dormitories and hidden stairwells. They quivered under the storm’s weight. And under me. My hand pressed against the glass, and in the flash of lightning, the glass spiderwebbed with cracks. The door behind me opened with a low groan.

Maybe being the talk of the academy had a tiny good side after all. Even if the bad side overshadowed it, having someone openly declare their support felt genuinely nice.She walked to her next class with a small, happy smile. Izumi’s voice cut through his thoughts. “Maya,” she said, glancing at the boy leaning lazily against the windowsill. “Their ace was in your middle school team, right?” Maya didn’t look away from the sky as he replied. “Hai,” he said simply. “We went to the same middle school, Tengoku Chu. It’s a renowned school. Known for its elite system. I got in through academics and inner connections, not sports.”

“Look at me, Rory. Breathe. Don’t let their war devour you.” For a moment, the chaos faded. For a moment, it was just his eyes and my shaking heart. But then the ground shook. A dragon’s tail slammed into the wall, stone breaking. Wolves howled, cutting through the lines of vampires. Fire roared, ice cracked, magic flared. The groups weren’t just fighting each other anymore; they were destroying the Academy itself. “Stop this!” I screamed again, but my voice broke under the weight of it all.

Every story has a beginning, some good, some bad, mine has never been a happy one, no matter who, or how I tell it, nobody will believe me. I can't rely on the people in my life, My parents ignore me, or are cruel to me, my friends are unreliable, and aren't trustworthy either. So what happens when I turn 16 years old, and run away from my problems to another world, only to find myself in the same magical world I played make belief in as a kid? With heartbreak at every turn, and a possible new relationship on the horizon, what could possibly go wrong in this world that hasn't happened to me on Earth?!

This series is quite well-done, and has a lot of goddess theology and ritual in it. 36-39. The three-hundred acres felt more like three-hundred miles as Lila made her way across the fields to an old cinderblock building at the far end of Freya’s horse farm.
