A newborn fawn trembles in the shadow of the tree where it sought refuge, too terrified to make a noise. It’s another female, I believe, her hide covered in frost. I slowly rise from my knees, clicking my tongue and making low, soft sounds so I don’t startle her. Fawns should have been born months ago, in the spring, but she’s fresh, likely only a few days old, young enough that her mother’s demise is a death sentence.
