Another loud snarl tears through the forest. Then fangs slice through Josh’s throat. A gurgle. A choking gasp. Then silence. The rain falls harder, as if trying to wash away the horror. But the stench of blood lingers still. I’m paralyzed. Afraid. Alone now, with it. The werewolf slowly turns. Our eyes meet. Twin golden flames bore into me. My breath falters. Shakes. Sure enough, under everyone's gaze, the young woman who had just run out was instantly enveloped in black mist as soon as she stepped out of the cafeteria. A scream echoed from within, and the mist slowly transformed into a red, blood-like fog. When the red fog finally dissipated, all that remained on the ground were bloodstains and a few bones. At that sight, the remaining few abandoned any thoughts of escaping. It was the first time I had seen such fear in their eyes. Their gazes, however, were fixed on my father, who stood beside me.

You can’t even see the sky because all the branches from the trees surrounding the campsite cover the small gap that should be above us. It gives off a strange vibe and I don’t like the feeling of this place. A shiver creeps down my spine causing the rest of my body to be covered in gooseflesh. I glance over at Ash and he seems to be having the same reaction. As we build the tent and make the fire I listen to the sounds of the woods, the flapping of a bird’s wing, the distant buzzing of a bumblebee, the small cry of a baby koala and the howl of a dingo but there’s no sign of a monster anywhere.

I rolled my sleeves up, gazing over the recently closed cases, and filing them into the proper categories. Vampire Shifter. Ghost. Demon. Boogeyman. Etc. I'd make a new file if we came across a new type of monster. The scent of strawberries filled my nose as Lucy plopped onto my lap, setting her laptop down to scroll the schedule. I brushed her longer blonde hair over her shoulder, peppering kisses against her throat. When we were human, her pulse would jump, but her reactions were still the same. She'd lean against my mouth, humming in contentment. "We have a Silas Devant at 10."

Alvin appears at my side, then, wordlessly helping me take the bedrolls into the tent and set them up. Darkness falls quickly on us, and I’m grateful Victor decided to make camp when he did. Our little family huddles around the fire, the boys and I looking anxiously around at the darkness that surrounds us. It’s some primordial fear, I think, that crawls its way up my spine then, telling me to look out into the woods expecting horrible things to burst from it. Or…is it something else? Something else pricking its little fingers against my skin, breathing on the back of my neck?

A big frown settle on my face. I contemplate on taking the book out of the bed then I spot the name of the coven written in the exact page that is open. The name of a coven is sitting there…. It gives me goosebumps on my skin and it is as irritating as that, that I suddenly wants to toss it away from the bed when I hear the coldest, chilliest and scariest voice I have heard in my entire life speaks from damn nowhere. I step backwards in both fear and shock. I look around and find no one and I wonder if my mind is still traumatized from all the things that have happened in the last four months.

I’m a large guy though I think I’m still growing, I’ll still never be like the BullDozer himself. “Sup,” I say, shutting the door and falling into a chair.
