I stared at my sleeping face and felt the deep, undeniable crawl of fear slither up my spine. “This means they know we went there. It was a serious caution. The Fates broke the thread that was attached to so many other threads, because a thread is a symbol of life. Someone was going to die when a thread snapped. Bardolph stared at me with horror, Otsana bled beneath the bride's veil, and Ashina lay inside the circle where motherhood had finally cost her everything. I wanted to laugh at them. I wanted to tell them this was still my design, still my throne, still my victory written through their weakness. But my mouth would not obey. My hand lifted without my permission, and black feathers burst from my palm like prayers turning into blades. Fear entered me then. Not strategy. Not anger. Fear.
