She has the language now. By November of the sixty-fifth year she has eighty-one entries and can see the shape. The fourth book is not structured the way the previous three were structured. It does not have parts and chapters and a formal argument that advances from claim to evidence to conclusion. It has entries — each one a day or a week of being inside the thing — and the entries have been organizing themselves, gradually, the way the second life organized itself: not by design but by accumulation, each one finding its place in relation to the previous ones until the whole has a shape that could not have been planned but is exactly right.

Distance between deciding and starting is where things go to not happen. The kitchen table. Two notebooks. His and hers. He has his compressed formal handwriting. She has the handwriting she developed in the farmhouse years — quicker than his, less formal, the handwriting of someone who learned to write for herself rather than for an audience. They decide on the structure. Alternating sections. His voice, then hers. Sometimes the same event from both sides. Sometimes different events that happened simultaneously in different rooms. Sometimes the same moment from two angles — the way the Edinburgh castle looks different depending on which side of the city you're standing on.

He hoped. Alaim looked at the fountain; the clearness of the water was mesmerizing. He moved closer. Thought after thought danced in his head that was tight from the ideas he kept. One after the other they appeared danced around him, mocked. One of them was the strongest. He returned to his room, lifted his pen and started writing his short work. A fable novella would be great, divided into sections that would later become stories. He had that strange notion of naming the sections in his books. Technically speaking, it's not a section but a different story-arc for lesser or greater character, but none the less it's a section of the same work. Many wondered why he does it, he simply replied,

Time seemed to be moving more slowly as we drew nearer to the water beneath us. 3. Winning my sixth grade spelling bee... I tried blocking out the excruciating pain screaming at me in my ear, every second we were plunging further and further down. 4. Art classes with Miss Miller... The blocking worked and I felt the contact with the water as our car fell in. 5. Bedtime stories with my grandmother... I jerked forward at the impact it created 6. Becoming class president in fourth grade... The impact was so strong I could feel my neck crack as it got jerked back.

The book contains present and past scenes parallely, which means the scenes after Raahi running away and the scenes that made Raahi run are written simultaneously. To differentiate between present and past scenes, focus on the writing style. The scenes written in ITALIC font describes the scenes from the past, while the scenes written normally depicts the scenes from the present.
