She lifted her head. In her bloodshot eyes, the faint glimmer of hope–the desperate longing for redemption–finally went out.
"The story between you and me," I said, looking out the window, "ended last winter, along with the child who never had the chance to be born."
I stood up, making it clear the visit was over.
She did not move. After a long while, as if gathering the last of her strength, she slowly rose to her feet, her steps unsteady.
