I had never been through a divorce before or known anyone who had, so how would I know that there were more hoops to jump through than signing a paper? I sighed, placing my head in my hands, slumping forward. I thought the fight was over. “Liam hasn’t severed the mate bond between you two,” my lawyer began cautiously, as if afraid to give me the bad news. “Yes, you’re divorced on paper, but unless Liam severs your bond, you’re still bound together.” I instinctively touch the mark on my neck that Liam gave to me years ago. I hated it. It was an ugly mark, one that chosen mates had. It was nothing compared to the beautiful mark of a fated mate.

For now, I went home—had to wait on Leo’s info before making my move. Next day, Leo came back empty-handed, "We can’t find her location." I stared at him, "What the hell do you mean, 'can’t find her'? People don’t just disappear." "We narrowed down the area she’s in, but no clue which apartment or door number." My face darkened, "Keep looking. I don’t care how long it takes—find her." The divorce hearing’s next week. I have to reach her before then, change her mind.

I blurted. An amused look crossed Xavier’s face. “Lose you?” “What if you can’t find me again. What if this journey takes me…far far away. How will I get back to you?” Xavier’s smirk faded. “There is…one way,” he said, his throat bobbing. “If we were…mates, we would never lose each other. We would be able to find one another wherever we went.” “Mates…” I murmured, flush hitting my cheeks. “How do we…become mates?”

I said: "Sure, in a second, but I was wondering where we, where you will be in a year, 5 years, 10 years...I don't have an answer for that and I worry that I can't always be there to help you." Mom said: "Well, honey, there IS one way that you COULD be sure you were always there for me. I helped him lie properly, covered him up and sat on the chair opposite. Was this his karma? I mean this was the exact state my mother found herself after the divorce. She became someone I couldn’t recognize. Luckily for her, she found another Mr.right who took her out of that misery. If this was what the mate bond did to people, or a divorce, or heartbreak, then I sure wasn’t ready to find the true one. My breakup with Bryan was something I foresaw and prepared myself for. It happened faster than I expected.

There used to be whole balls, around the lunar cycle, for people to meet their mates.
