Because fire fights fire. And I was done watching the city burn.

He set the untouched drink aside and reached for his coat. Fire had rules. Fire did not look back. Fire did not involve itself in accidents or strangers. But tonight, Fire had collided with something cold. And for reasons he couldn’t yet explain, Alexander Steele knew this was not just an incident. It was the beginning of something dangerous.

I stood where I was even when my instincts were hitting the flight part of it hard. Then I saw it… Streaks of red raced through the sky before coming down hard against the boundary in multiple points. Not ordinary fire. No…this was Phoenix fire. A sea of sparks exploded, sending them through the air. Everything shook. The ground. The trees. Our boundary held until one more round of Phoenix fire hit it. Victory was shouted out by the demons as if they’d already won the battle.

Now it roared awake, and hungry. They reached the ridge, and the land below them was on fire. The village, a simple cluster of cottages and trading posts nestled between the trees, was being consumed. Roofs collapsed inward, sparks leaping toward the treetops. Wolves scattered in every direction… mothers clutching pups, elders coughing through the smoke. And beyond the flames, half-shrouded in morning mist, Silver Fang banners rippled in retreat. “Cowards,” Ryder growled, his voice shaking with fury. His golden eyes burned as he watched their enemies melt into the forest shadows. “They strike and run.”

In the distance, the firefighters’ sirens wailed. “Fuck,” I muttered. “Took them long enough.” Then I remembered how far we were from the city. Fires like this didn’t just happen here.

I watched in silence as my childhood memories burned. "The small town of Conifer is burning this morning. Fire crews are struggling to contain a wildfire that started late last night off of US-285. Mandatory evacuations via reverse 911 are in full effect for certain divisions of Conifer and the surrounding areas." The scene cut to firefighters in full yellow gear battling the flames.

Chapter 1: Into the Inferno The roar of the flames was deafening, like the devil himself breathing down their necks. Dante Reyes kicked through another burning door, his heavy turnout gear already feeling like a furnace. At thirty five, he had seen hell more times than he could ever count, but this super fire fueled by climate dried forests and years of corporate greed was something else entirely. “Anyone here?!” he bellowed, voice muffled by his mask. "Can anyone hear me, he shouted."

With each step towards the exit, the flames roaring around us, I am driven by a singular purpose - to bring the child to safety, to protect him from harm and reunite him with his father. As I stand by my car, arms crossed over my chest, my gaze scans the scene before me. The firefighters are still battling the remnants of the fire, their efforts gradually bringing the situation under control. The concern for my company and its workers weighs heavily on my mind, a sense of responsibility driving me to ensure their safety and well-being.

Fire. She wanted to scream at me. Maybe slap me. Maybe stab me. And God, I loved that look. But I can't fire her just for that look, that preety mouth decided to keep quiet. Not many people dare look at me like that. Most look at me like I’m a threat. She looked at me like I was a challenge. Then Brooke started flirting with her, right in front of me.
