The Fire That Chose Me
Evelynn whispered, her voice trembling.
“They never are,” Aiden muttered, stepping closer to her, his shoulder brushing hers. His stance was ready, but his presence was steadying, like an anchor in the storm.
A second shadow darted from the left. Evelynn reacted without thinking, thrusting her hands forward. Flame burst from her palms, white-hot, striking the creature mid-leap. It shrieked, twisting in the air, then hit the ground smoldering before it skittered back into the trees.
