He was standing near the bar, his back to them, but Kayla would recognize that broad shoulders and that cocky stance anywhere. But when he turned around, she barely recognized him. His face was gaunt, his hair unkempt, and he was wearing a worn-out suit that looked like it had seen better days. His eyes were red-rimmed, and he was holding a glass of whiskey so tightly his knuckles were white.

The hum of the fridge filled the silence of the apartment — familiar, steady, too loud for a morning that already felt heavy. Footsteps shuffled down the hall. Gwen began to catch parts of the conversations going on around her. I would desperately try to find out whether I might still have a chance with her.
