I said out of nowhere, and suddenly, Morgan stepped on the brakes and made us almost bump our heads. Thanks to the person who invented the seatbelt. "Why did you stop?" I yelled. "F*cking red lights." She replied, and as the mention of red, I looked at the traffic light, and it's red. Yes, Red is mine. Just mine.

"But tonight, let's just focus on us. On learning each other. Is that okay?" I nodded. Sebastian stood and held out his hand. "Then let me show you what it means to let go." I placed my hand in his and he pulled me to my feet. He led me to the center of the room where there was more space and air to breathe. “Safe word,” he said. “we’ll use the traffic light starting with red. Say it and everything stops, no questions, no judgment. Yellow if you need me to slow down. Green if you’re good. Understand?”

I heard a soft clicking sound, that of the automatic brake being engaged. — A red light, Marisa whispered gently. We’ll arrive in a few minutes. Breathe, my beautiful. My eyes slid towards the window. Outside, the city seemed peaceful, indifferent to what was happening in my chest. I caught sight of a street vendor weaving between cars with his bottles of water, a child running after a ball on the sidewalk, and then... the traffic light's bright panel. Red. My gaze froze on the small digital screen next to it: 00:58. Fifty-eight seconds before the car would start moving again.

I said flatly, firm enough to leave no room for argument. “Yes, Ma’am.” I looked ahead again as the red light forced the car to stop. My fingertips tapped lightly against the armrest, a small rhythm only I noticed.

"The driver can't stop there. It is the middle lane, how could the car stop? The traffic is jammed and packed as you see." The low husky voice said. His sharp eyes hid all the cunning sparkle. Amiya sighed. She had doubts since she had jumped into his car that she might have made a mistake. Her grandma always taught her not to trust men easily. Especially, the lustful man who was sitting cross-legged, using his sharp eyes to strip her naked right now. Amiya girl looked out on the road. Not far, about a hundred meters, there was a set of traffic lights. "I can get out there. Please tell your driver. When the car stop at the red light, I will just quickly get out."

He was gasping for breath and looked exhausted. The crowd heard some sort of crackling sound as the obsidian started to light up which made the crowd's eyes widen in awe. “One light! Two lights!” The lights paused for nine seconds before turning off. The first light dimmed one second before the third light would light up meaning that the young man’s result was two lights at nine seconds. One second more and he would have qualified for the test.

My tires lost grip for a split second, and the back end of the car fishtailed before catching traction again. I didn’t slow down. I couldn’t. I gritted my teeth, eyes stinging. I was breathing hard, not even realizing I was crying. Then— A flash of red ahead. A stoplight. I hadn’t seen it until it was too late. A delivery truck crossed the intersection. I saw the side of it appear like a wall, way too close. I slammed both feet on the brake, tires screeching, the car screaming in protest. Time slowed. My headlights lit up the side of the truck.

Suddenly I just was not scared and sad anymore but instead, I started to feel relieved as if I know for sure that I've really got this. "Thanks, Dad," I said, with a smile that screamed nothing but gladness. Not for his advice but for him. "I didn't do anything. It's you that made yourself believe that you can do this. But now, please do me a favour by going inside and calling your mother and your brother. We are running late. Virginia is two hours away and we have to reach there by one latest and it is already nine fifty-five."

Bag after bag of plasma was pumped into my veins. One raw, guttural scream tore out of me, and then the sound of a baby crying filled the room. Minutes began to pass, but the light didn’t go away—it didn’t change. Maybe the light was broken. So he prepared to move forward, but a motorcycle stopped beside him by the driver’s door, and another pulled ahead and cut across in front of his truck.
