The room was dimly lit, the heavy scent of cigar smoke curling through the air. Alessandro De Luca leaned back in his leather chair, swirling a glass of red wine. Across from him, Mateo Salazar stood with calculated ease, his sharp eyes betraying no emotion. The silence between them was razor-thin, each man waiting for the other to speak first. “A man of your reputation shouldn’t be wasting his time in the shadows, Alessandro.” Mateo spoke, breaking the silence. “Especially not when there’s an opportunity to reclaim what’s rightfully yours.”

He approached the altar, bowed to the skeleton, and then struck out with a palm, shattering it to pieces. The netherflame burst forth, whipping and spinning wildly through the air. At the same time, from the second floor, all those countless glowing fish surged upward, flooding toward the netherflame. So, that was it. Those so-called "fish" were nothing more than shadows cast by the netherflame. That was why no matter how Gideon tried to grab them, he couldn't catch a single one back in the deep sea. All the shadows merged together. The netherflame swelled in size, making Brantley's expression turn grim.

She took a deep breath and took Lu’s hand. They left the house without a word. She didn’t look back, but held tightly to her bag and to Lu. She heard the rumble of flames as they erupted behind her. Knew the fire was gnawing at the skeleton of its structure. She bit her lip, concentrating, and called up a fierce wind that fed the fire. She felt the heat at her back, saw her shadow dance before her. Wild and free and fierce. Her shadow had a knife in its hand that glowed like the divine guiding star. She had never known shadows could smile before.

She’s great with her magic and has a deep knowledge of plants and how to use and grow them. Ezekiel had stronger shadows, barely weakened by her flames. He and Shay would give us tips on when best to shoot her flames and where. Apparently, there were certain weak spots inside a shadow. I needed to find the spots that looked the lightest, ones that seemed more gray than black. If I shot my flames there, the shadow would disappear. It seemed simple enough, but most of the time, the shadows were so fast, there was no way for me to hit it before it hit me.

I gave a bitter smile, My face burning at his words. “confusing right?” Shadowflame said casually, slinging his arms over my neck as if that was the most normal thing to do in the world. It took me a moment to realise what he was asking.

Synchronously, three blue flames appeared out of nowhere, and placed themselves near the tetrad. "What are these?" Nimuel shrieked, pulling Nexus out of their ways. "These, Nimuel Saeltheriel, are shadows, the atoms of the mortal lands, as you might say. But instead of just making things, shadows have the power to destroy them as well." The boat came to a stop in front of them. They looked at it beadily. It was a plain looking boat, built out of wood. But the shadows around it gave it a ghostly aura.

“Then we do this together.” Celeste nodded. “The first fire will be named. The justification dismantled. And the pattern broken.” Outside, the city lights flickered on as evening settled. The world continued, unaware of the history written into ash beneath its feet. Evelyn looked once more at the folder on the table. Fires. Names. Lies framed as necessity. The first fire had been lit in fear. This time, the truth would burn instead. And it would not stop until the pattern was gone.

The Edge of Shadows The bitter wind howled through the ruined valley, carrying with it the scent of ash and despair. "May this flame burn where I could not. May it light the darkness I created. May it warm those I left cold with my cruelty." The fire took, slow at first as flames licked tentatively at the kindling, testing its worthiness. Then it caught in earnest, roaring to life as if the night itself had been waiting for this moment, hungry for the light that had been absent too long. The flames climbed higher, painting the courtyard in shades of gold and amber, casting dancing shadows across walls that had seen too much death and not enough life.
