Melody takes a deep inhale, another pursed lip exhale, escapes. "Flashlights," Leo says. Melody breaks out of her thoughts and looks for flashlights. She takes two off the hook. Wavers in the thought. Then reaches for a third. "Batteries — double-A and triple-A." Leo reads off the list. "I see them." Mia bracing Pearl, shifting her weight, draping Pearl nearly over her shoulder, “They’re right here.” pointing with her finger. Leo grabs a few packages of batteries. "Candles." Mia looks at the list.

“You’re right. Yes! We just need to follow the trail.” I glanced around us, looking for more Skittles, but it had gotten so dark we couldn’t see very far. “We’re going to need a light.” “I have a flashlight in my bag,” Brick offered, already slinging the pack off his shoulders. Yes! Thank you, God, for my junk-hoarding little brother. “Give it here,” I said, holding out my hand. Once he passed it over, I turned on the light, and we scanned the ground together, spreading away from the site of the first Skittle in a circular pattern, until Brick cried, “There! There’s another.”

A little too far. I stumbled forward through the shadows, metal grates slick beneath my shoes, sparks flashing red and white like lightning bugs in a storm. “We need light,” I gasped, coughing. Liam’s voice cut through the darkness again. “I found an emergency kit!” Seconds later, a flickering flashlight cut through the black—casting Liam’s shadow onto the wall like a ghost. He was covered in soot, bleeding from a shallow gash above his temple, but his hands were steady as he tossed me a second flashlight.

Holding one finger out, he poked the hard object then he touched it gently and held it in his hands. The object was long and quite enlarged at the tip with a switch attached to its side and Caius felt around the item before realizing it was a flashlight.

NIGHT. HALO engages night and heat vision, watching the mercenaries become red figures against the intense brightness of the night-vision in his optics. He unholsters then raises his rifle, and a light sound of metal emanates as he disperses one of the quarter-sized disks. It falls in the centre of the enclosure, and one mercenary looks down. Shining his flashlight on the ground. He sees it, grows alarmed as his head tilts in confusion, but he picks it up and sticks it in his pocket.

My thumb found the button, and the LED flashlight cut through the gloom like a scalpel. The beam was harsh, casting long, skeletal shadows that danced wildly across the rafters. “You’re real!” “Tragically.” She grabbed something beside her—a metal stick—and flicked a switch. A blinding white beam erupted from its tip. I hissed, flinging up an arm. “Extinguish your witchfire!” “It’s a flashlight!” she yelled. “A what?” “A stick that makes light!” “You cage lightning now?!” “Apparently!” “Savages.” She kept the light trained on me, trembling. “Stay where you are!” “I’ve been staying for two hundred years,” I muttered.
