"It grants eternal youth and banishes wrinkles." Modern Vespera uncorked it and sniffed. "It smells like cucumber water." Fantasy Vespera winked. "It is cucumber water. But if you tell the peasants it is magic, they believe it. Perception is power, sister." Modern Vespera laughed. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a sleek, black cylinder. "A trade," Modern Vespera said. "A solar-powered, military-grade LED flashlight. Never runs out of battery as long as there is a sun."

“Cla called it a flashlight. She said we should use it if we need to go to the bathroom, but be careful not to shine it on people’s homes if we can help it.” Rain nodded. So it was sort of like a flashtube, but not nearly as powerful. It made sense that they wouldn’t want to use something as bright as the devices they had available in such a confined space, but she’d never heard of a flashlight before. Perhaps they’d never heard of a flashtube.

There’s a bulb overhead but it’s burned out and their only light is slanting through a small awning window, like a ray of sunshine in a prison cell highlighting dust motes and worsening their individual urges to sneeze. “I want to see.” Rose waits patiently a few feet away, not pushing or teasing. She watches me with neither sympathy nor judgment, which I appreciate. “All right,” Cole says, looking me over for a moment before we all turn together toward the door at the bottom of the stairs, passing through it and starting down the steps. Halfway down Cole slips something out of his pocket and presses a button, producing a very bright little light and handing it to me. My eyebrows raise for a moment at the adorable mini flashlight but I hold it high above us so that we can all benefit from the light.

I chuckled, the sunlight reflecting off the shiny surface of the tags, revealing the engraved letters. "Can you really hold me responsible?" Frederick gently brushed away a stray strand of hair that had fallen across my face. I closed my eyes, savoring the gentle caress. "The moon goddess can be quite unpredictable at times; her powers are truly awe-inspiring." ... "I don't appreciate that you wear these out of concern for your safe return," I said, toying with the tags and rolling the names between my fingers: Frederick Henson, Beta 1, Hugo A., North East. "You can rest assured that nothing will happen to you, so there's no need to worry about these forms of identification."

Bri said "You will also have my mark", the moon Goddess said. "It's a cool tattoo that everyone's wolves recognize as the mark of the moon goddess". Bri said. "You are stronger than you think", the moon goddess said. And with that final statement, she slowly faded away as I slowly slipped back into the darkness away from the flowers.
