Hawks circled in the clear blue searching for prey below in glades and grasslands. Gliding aloft, wind whistling through feathers spread wide like fingers to catch the rising drafts of heat and air, heads swiveling, eyes darting, it was up not down that they should have been studying. Startled, they shrieked their displeasure as Poe parted their ranks, breaking their aerial ballet as he descended limned in argent and gold.

Not this quickly. Fledglings always floundered in the beginning, wild, unpredictable, their bodies powerful but clumsy. It took months, sometimes years, for them to adapt, to hone control over speed, strength, reflex. But Natalie… my little fox… she had matched me head-on in her first sparring session.

My parents’ delighted voices filled my ear. “It’s good that you finally figured things out, Jon. No matter how good Ellis is, she’s ten years older than you. I asked, unsure of my own words. “How about a month?” my aunt rephrased, “really get to know them, get all the juicy details.
