Prologue II: Pyre, 3113 Pyre Av 5, 3113 Stephan Caliphus, King Everything was on fire the night he finished the book in the back room of a borrowed house. He laid his glasses down on the desk in front of him and rubbed his tired eyes. The crackling of flames could be heard as the city burned all around them. The blood curdling screams of the men in the streets where they died was enough to make the blood of the fiercest warrior run cold, but he was a man of empathy and it hurt him more than it did the others.

Killian commanded, his charcoal-grey wolf-aura flaring to provide a heat-shield for the triplets. We entered the Forge through a massive archway etched with Weaver’s knots. Inside, the walls were lined with thousands of empty racks—waiting for blades, armor, and tech that hadn't been forged in a millennium. In the center of the room was a pedestal holding a single, unlit flame. "It’s cold," Ace whispered, touching the stone. "The fire is out." "It’s not out," I said, walking toward the pedestal. I could feel the "Holy Fire" in my blood reaching out, recognizing its twin. "It’s waiting for the spark."

My only connection to the world was a narrow window choked with thick, iron bars. How the hell did I end up here? My eyes welled with tears, a sob threatening to break free, but every time I closed my eyes, I felt the phantom pressure of Derek’s hand on my neck and the brutal heat of his body against mine. "War property," I whispered to myself. The words brought a wave of nausea, followed by a traitorous, electric tingle in my gut. "He won't hurt us..." my treacherous wolf murmured. "What the hell are you talking about? He doesn't see us as a person; he sees us as prey he wants to devour. Didn't you feel his pulse?" I snapped, my teeth gritted.

Shadows flicker red beneath my door now, dancing like cruel spirits. “Run!” The word echoes in my skull. The door bursts inward in a spray of sparks and splintered wood. Flames roar behind a towering silhouette. A man steps through the fire. I cannot see his face — only the outline of him carved in burning light. And his eyes. They glow. Not with reflection. With power. The world fractures into red and gold. Heat devours everything. The scream tears from my throat— I wake choking on smoke that isn’t there. My room is dark. Quiet. Whole.

His voice was strained, broken. “You are temptation,” he said. “You are the one who taught me how to tempt.” He swallowed hard. Lightning flared. Rain hammered the glass. His forehead lowered to hers. “Tell me to stop.” “No.” He closed his eyes. “You don’t understand what I would do for you.” “Then show me.” He drew back an inch, gaze locked to hers, hunger exposed. “I would burn down every man who touches you.” Lucia’s breath hitched. “I don’t want other men.”

Phoenix fire. I was everywhere and nowhere. I was the flame that danced in every torch, the heat in every breath, the light of the stars themselves. I could feel every heartbeat in the circle, taste every fear, every hope. And then, in the center of the inferno, I began to reform. First bones, gleaming gold instead of white. Then muscles, woven from threads of fire. Skin that sparkled with embedded flames. And finally, opening my eyes, I found they now burned with eternal fire.

My body shivered in the cold, my fingers still glowing faintly, fire hungry and impatient. Lucia’s laughter echoed faintly in my mind, a memory sharper than any wound. She had stolen everything—my family, my home, my future. Damien… lost, unaware of what had survived. My jaw tightened. I let my nails dig into the dirt, sparks flickering at my touch. I would rise. I would burn. But not yet. I let the forest hold me, the darkness teach me. I discovered the limits of my strength, the edges of my fire, the small victories of stealth and control. Each breath, each movement, each flicker of flame was a lesson. I was learning.

Her breath trembled as something inside her cracked—not with breaking, but with release. She closed her eyes, drawing the wildfire closer, not to crush it, not to run—but to face it. The whispers tore at her, but she pushed back with her own voice, raw and burning: “I am not your kindling. I am not your ruin. I am flame, and flame is mine to carry.” The wildfire shuddered, sparks bursting outward like a thousand tiny stars. The dark edges burned away, leaving only fierce, golden light that wrapped around her like a mantle.

Not flame but memory. It rose through my spine slowly, not as words, but as images. Fire against night skies, stone fortresses and beasts larger than wolves. Creatures not born of this earth tearing through lines of warriors. And standing before them, was a wolf wreathed in white flame. Younger, wild and unrestrained. "You were not meant to discover it this way," Inferno said at last. My jaw tightened. “So it wasn’t a relic?” "No." The images sharpened, and I noticed the forging.

The flame crept closer, a lover’s caress just shy of her skin. I let it dance along the curve of her collarbone, watching as she flinched but didn’t move away. “That’s the thing about fire,” I murmured. “It’s both destruction and creation. It burns, yes. But it also forges. It makes something stronger, something unbreakable.” I lowered the flame to the inside of her wrist, just a whisper of heat against her skin. She gasped, her body jerking, but she didn’t pull away.
