I am telling you because you are going to watch me do it, and I do not want you to think I am regretting the choice. Are you? No. I chose this. I am grieving what it costs. Those are different things. He crossed the room. He sat beside her, back against the same wall, and took her hand in both of his — the same plain warm hold from the study the night before. She let herself be held. * * * At some point in the long middle she said, without occasion: Do you know what was in the notebook's fourth section? He looked at her. No. She had kept it for sixty days. She had said it once, to a train window, in the dark.

The wardrobe was empty except for Serena's dresses, which now looked cheap and desperate hanging there. Damian walked past them to the small wall safe behind the vanity. He had installed it years ago after Eve once joked that every mafia wife deserved somewhere to hide her secrets. At the time, he had laughed and kissed her temple. He had forgotten the safe existed. The code was not his birthday. Not Serena's. Not the wedding date. He typed in the day he first brought Eve back to the manor after the wedding. The safe opened. There was no jewelry inside. No love letter. No note begging him to understand.

I nodded, avoided her gaze, and went to the kitchen to get some water to take the medicine. That night, Mom slept beside me. I fell asleep quickly, but I had a nightmare.
