From the first day, I saw you, and damn I told myself you weren’t for me. That you were a threat, but still, I got you. Then we got separated, but even after everything and all the hurtful things I did to you, we’re still together. I’ll never forgive myself for what I did, so I want to make things right at every turn. “Well, your boss is a bear, and the guy we’re after is a bear, so he’s going to help. The only reason I’m making it my problem is because the rogue bear has been threatening our pack.” She bit her lip, the sexiest thing he’d ever seen. “I like the sound of that. Our pack. It feels good to belong to something bigger.” “And I promise I’ll come back for you. This isn’t forever.” “I know. It’s my problem. I’ve been sent away since I can remember, and nobody ever came back for me. The curse of being a foster kid.” “Foster kid?” “A girl without parents. Passed around from babysitter to babysitter, but never belonged anywhere.”

"Sorry, Ryder. I am engaged to her now and we are expecting our first child. I hope you find the right man one day." "Oh. I'm sorry, Brooks, I didn't know." "It's ok. I try to keep my personal life, well personal." "Thank you for what you said. I hope I do soon. It's hard being a single mom." "I'm sure it is. Look I know you struggle with work and paying bills so from now on, I am going to let Colton get 3 packs of cards for free until he has a complete deck." "Thank you so much, Brooks."

Because sometimes the strongest thing you’ll ever do… Is nothing. No reply. No return. No relapsing into old patterns. Just walking away. Quietly. Softly. Completely.

I asked hitting his chest. "Because baby, I'll assure you for as much as you need me to. I'll love you on days when it's easy. I'll love you even more on days when it's hard. I'll love you forever. I'm yours. Now and Forever. "

"Stop messing around, Milton. You pursued me for three years, and we lived together for seven. Ten years is a long time. I know you're angry because of my mistake. I really know I was wrong." As she spoke, she put on a deeply affectionate expression. "You spent three years making me fall for you, so I'll do the same for ten years, until you forgive me. My love for you is real. I'll love you forever!" Listening to her promises right in front of me made my stomach churn with disgust. Maybe someone else could forgive her. The tiny, folded slip of paper , Ethan Grant’s phone number , had become my personal religion. For fourteen agonizing days, it had lived tucked deep inside the stitching of my uniform apron, a burning coal against my skin. Two weeks. I had survived two weeks of perfect silence, two weeks of scrubbing floors and polishing secrets, pretending the warm pressure of his lips on my cheek had been nothing but a fever dream.

"And yes, I will be fine, but keep on warning me every month. I will be happiest. Are you sure about it?" "Sure the moment I asked you to move in for forever." He rubbed his knuckles at the spine of my back. "I will change my room for you. We'll have a library. I will ask dad to turn one of the rooms to a library. But no reading late because I love my sleep. Nisha will be your sister. You'll be mine, no more restrictions. I will be yours and you'll be mine in every way. And you'll be Mrs. Oberoi next year."

He was smart as a whip though, and under our care, we would straighten him out, give him a loving home, and Jacob would go on to become a pediatrician who specialized in infant heart surgery. So Felix was only the start of what would become a whole brood of children, all adopted, all loved like they were our own. And then, when the last of our littles left our house for college, Cameron and I would keep on fostering children. We would show them kindness and love, providing them with an interim house until they found families of their own. 14 different foster children would pass through our doors, and every single one of them would hold a special place in our hearts.

Foster died on a warm morning in late May, three years after his diagnosis and considerably more peacefully than either the doctors or the family had allowed themselves to fully hope for, in the garden beneath the ancient maple tree, with Amara's hand in his and Wren kneeling in the grass beside him.
