“I’m done with Lily’s drawing!” Aaron declared proudly as he waved his drawing wildly in the air. Unlike Emerald with her letter, Aaron’s piece of paper was actually important. He ran towards Cassie and Felix – who had disentangled their bodies the moment he shot up from Felix’s chair – and held up his drawing so that they could both admire it. “That’s Cassie and that’s me and that’s Lily.” He explained, pointing to the various stick figures on the paper. It was drawn in bold, vibrant colors. In the center was a stone castle with blue flags on the turrets. Standing in the grass out front were three stick-figure people holding hands. On the left was a figure with black hair in a red dress labeled Mommy. On the right was a broad figure colored in black crayon labeled Mr. Tyson. And right between them, holding both of their hands with a yellow smiley face, was a smaller figure labeled Leo.

This was the kind of thing that woke the city up and left it grousing in its sleep. Around dusk, a woman from the daycare brought Sophie’s little blue spade and a crayon drawing of a family, three stick figures holding hands under an enormous yellow sun. Kael let out a long, dry sigh. "Let me guess. The one with the furious eyebrows is your long-lost aunt?"
