“These books you found are great, Fiona. I love it that some of your favorites are included. I especially love it that you’re donating them to a good cause,” Chris joked, waving a book in the air before placing it on one of the open shelves in his library. The room was cold, but Fiona’s skin was fevered as she finally presented him with the second half of her surprise. “There are a few more in here I thought you might like too.” Handing off the smaller box, she watched as Chris’s brow wrinkled. “Your library is already full to the brim, and I don’t think I can just leave them in the boxes.” It wasn’t what I was thinking about, but it was a good distraction and a very important issue. I had nowhere to keep them, and I couldn’t just leave them in the boxes. Books were meant to be on shelves to be read and displayed, not holed up in cardboard boxes and not serving their purpose. “What about the shelf in your room?” Dante asked. “It won’t contain half of what is here, and you said more are coming tomorrow. There’s no magic I would perform that would make all of them fit into that tiny bookshelf.” I sighed, and my shoulders dropped.

The girl cleared the table, and we headed to the lounge room, where I looked at the box with trepidation. “Dad, when I left Mum's a few years ago, I took four boxes with me that were supposed to contain all my medical books from my uni days. When I removed the first two books from this box, I found that what was below was not mine; I think you and Pam would like to view them.”Lena pushed the box in my direction, and I stared at it as if it was going to burn me; Pam moved closer but did not dig in until I made a move or permitted her to do so. All eyes were on me, waiting.

They were making this a little too easy for me. I picked out the phone Luca had given me for the mission and took a picture of the plan. The warehouse must be empty since it was mostly for storage but everything had been moved out by the company that last used it, according to the small piece of newspaper I found inside the box. I read as much of the warehouse as I could before putting the box back and dusting myself off. I went back to the front, the library was much more crowded and the librarian seemed busy so I just waved at her before walking out.

And before she could react, she had already questioned him. "Oh?" Marcus raised his head and looked at her, "Which of these?" "Those at the back." She answered as she pointed at the four piled up thick books who obviously looked worn out. "Oh. I found that inside the box at the library's storage room. It was interesting hence I took it." Marcus nonchalantly answered. As he looked at Minerva who had a complicated look at the old books, he couldn't help but offer, "Read it if you want. You could also take that to your room."

I said it, but God, it was harder this time. The third box had a collection of novels, and my eyes nearly popped out of their sockets. I couldn't return this, it wasn’t a luxury gift, right? Just books. Books weren’t bribery. Books were safe. A harmless, thoughtful gesture. I was bargaining with myself, and I knew it. But as my fingers traced the cover, the side of me that wanted to keep them won. Six novels. All from my favorite authors. How did he know? The thought sat uncomfortably in my mind as I gathered the empty packaging, along with the designer bag, and carried them straight outside. I dumped them into the hallway, shutting the door more gently this time.

"Look at that. We started a movement." Lina smiled, a real, unburdened smile. "We gave them the first sentence. They're writing the rest of the book themselves." Elara’s ship transmitted a new set of coordinates. Not a world in crisis, but a quiet, stable system at the crossroads of a dozen major narrative currents.
