I took it and tried to open it but it was locked. I shook it and heard that it has something inside. I didn't know what was inside. I was gonna put it back until I saw my mother's initials engraved on the side. I knew then that I couldn't leave it. I took it and locked the door. I went into the car were Jonathan was waiting for me.

Mains replied, taking the page back from me, “seems as though a lot of this book is in rough repair. We’ll have to try and restore it. It was in that funny box over there.” I followed his gesture to a wood and steel box, a deep green colour, tucked away in the back of the library. It almost looked like a steamer trunk, though only a quarter of the size. A thick brass clasp held it shut, weathered and creaking with age. It was heavy, but after opening it against the stiff, rusted hinges I saw that only a smattering of papers lay inside. “Where was this box from?” I asked, I had never seen such an unusual box among our collection.

"Do you like the books? I kept wanting to give you something special, I know the other gifts are but they're also cultural and mandatory..." She interrupted him. "Books?" "You haven't opened it right? Great way to ruin my own surprise." She immediately unzipped the box and it's contents made her stop and stare. It was divided into sections, one was books stacked atop the other. Sabeerah brought them out one by one.

With a firm tug, the board lifts, revealing a dark recess beneath. I gasp. Carton boxes, envelopes, and a sacred-looking box are nestled in the hidden space. The boxes are worn and slightly dusty, as though they’ve been there for years, untouched by time or prying eyes. “What’s all this?” I whisper, the words barely audible as I pull one of the boxes out, placing it carefully on the floor above. The sacred box catches my attention immediately. It’s carved with intricate patterns that almost seem to shimmer, its wood weathered but sturdy. It looks ancient, like something out of a forgotten history. My hands hover over it, hesitant but compelled.

The moon crest etched on its lid was the same one I had seen on the arrow days ago.

I took one out and used it to slice through the tape of the mysterious box, my hands trembling slightly. The moment I pried it open, a foul stench hit my nose. I gagged, covering my nose with my hand. What the hell was that? Curiosity gnawed at me, overriding my better judgment. I peaked into the box— And froze. Blood drained from my face and my stomach lurched violently. Blood. So much blood. And inside was a dead puppy , it's tiny body marred with multiple stab wounds and a note scrawled in blood. It was heavy, its surface carved with intricate patterns of roses and thorns. A small latch kept it sealed. He opened it carefully, revealing a stack of photographs inside.

I thanked him before taking the box and disappearing into the house. My limbs felt like jelly, my mouth dried from the anticipation of what awaited me. I arrived in my living room and dumped the box onto the coffee table before ripping it open. There were eight books, thicker than what I had imagined, yet smaller than the one she went to the interview carrying.
