FORBIDDEN PLEASURES
I stand there, heart already racing at the thought of freedom.
Mom walks in from the kitchen, Bible clutched in her manicured hands. Even on a weekend she’s dressed in her lawyer attire, posture straight and serious. She lives between the courtroom and the church pews, constantly praying away sins, especially Dad’s. “You almost forgot this, Lisa,” she says, pressing the heavy book into my palms. Her voice carries that familiar mix of love and fear. “Pray every single day. Stay a good girl. The world out there is full of temptation waiting to corrupt pure hearts like yours.”
