I closed my eyes and began to pray, my voice soft and steady in the quiet room. “Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus…” I prayed through every mystery, each word a quiet plea. I asked God to protect me from whatever strange forces were at work in this house. I prayed for my father’s healing. I prayed for strength to remain pure in body and mind. When I finished the last prayer, I felt a little calmer. A little more anchored.

I get up from the bed and change into my pajamas. "Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done. On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory for ever and ever, amen." I stand up and enter into the sheets with the thought of getting as much sleep as possible but something feels different. Like I'm missing something.

It was a thick book, and the header read: The New Testament, The Book of Luke. She scanned the pages, looking for a sign, wondering if her prayer had been answered. She read: “I grant you power and authority over every demon, power and authority over every disease.” Her heart raced. Was it a message?

"As we forgive those who trespass against us…” I curled my fingers deeply inside her, pressing against that spot that made her see stars. "Lead us not into temptation and shit..." She gasped out, her prayer breaking off into moans. I thrust harder, knowing I was the reason her words and thoughts were scrambled"...and deliver us from evil…”

"–Hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven, give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us," She heard bells ring and believed someone had spotted the Athànatoi. "–And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from every evil,even this evil that is upon us, Lord. "For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory. Forever. Amen."

Clutching the worn leather-bound book of religious texts and ancient prayers, she opened it to the page where she had left off the day before, and resumed praying. "Grant, O Great Ukrae, the restoration of health, and healing hands, both to body and soul," she read, tending to the flickering flames in the stone fireplace with her free hand. "Almighty and powerful Ukrae, who heals all and saves all, may thine blessings restore strength and life." She lost herself in the sacred texts, time drifting away unnoticed as always. It wasn’t until Madam Livia entered to administer his night medicines that she stirred, gently closing the prayer book and rising to join her.

My sin and create me a new heart that will be pleasing in your sight. Please help me not fall into temptation but to live by your word and fulfill your mission, let your glory reign forever, amen.
