"You've been since the party. What the hell is going on?" Somewhere in my throat, the words caught. "Nothing. I'm fine." Eddie raised one perfect eyebrow, unconvinced. "Fine? You look half the time like you might faint. Pale and distracted: and don't think I haven't noticed you skipping meals. So what's really going on?" "I told you I'm fine," I reiterated, a little too quickly, clutching my notebook to my chest as though it were a shield against his scrutiny. But Eddie was Eddie: my best friend, my ballast-and I had never, ever gotten away with a lie in front of him. He sighed dramatically, rolling his eyes, and, without further ado, seized my wrist.

“Adrian, playing with fire can burn you.” I lowered my gaze. A flicker of cunning flashed across the eyes of the seemingly innocent girl. So I was not the only actor in this little play. Ryan suddenly stood up. “I will go help.” As he passed by me, he lowered his voice. “Do not get too confident. Some habits are bone‑deep.” Soon, laughter drifted from the kitchen. Chloe’s cool fingertips rested on the back of my hand. “Claire always wanted the best. That included people.”

“Mack won’t even look at me.” “Don’t worry. This is just the beginning.” Abby said. “Sooner or later, he will have to show himself. Until then, I will talk to Beth and Gabe. We will get it, so he has to come by; otherwise, no one will pay attention to him. I don’t think he would like being left in the cold like that. He does need them to feel good. They are his only real friends.”

And just like that, they all adjusted, sitting around her as they began playing the game, except for Edward who sat there solely committing malpractice by helping his girlfriend out. It still was fun afterwards. During the game, Daisy thought about her other two friends Rose and Cindy. It's been a really long time since they all played together. 'How I wish they are here,' she thought but didn't voice that out. She did not want to ruin the moment. Then she thought of Rose who is also at the hospital due to the accident. There and then, she made up her mind to go over to see her friends tomorrow. She has missed them way too much not to see them any further than this.

I scoffed deciding to keep my mouth shut for once. A heartbeat later Justin walked in a frown etched on his face. Behind him with a playful grin and eyes dancing in amusement I presumed was Eddy? Justin sat next to Andrew “This is Edward, call him Eddy unless you want to be punched.” He joked once sitting. Eddy just rolled his hazel eyes flashing me a lopsided boyish grin. I was the only female here. This is beyond dreadful. The guys chatted about random stuff. Something about patrols and people I didn't know. I tuned it out slowly eating my food.

But I missed my friends, my family. I didn’t really try making new friends in the beginning, well except for Eddie. But who wouldn’t want to be friends with him? He was sweet, charming and really good looking. He was also going through something that I was very familiar with. We both had seen our mothers being murdered. And we both had dads that weren’t dealing well with it.

Marni never turned away from Heith, who never looked at Milli as Marni announced, “I’m off tonight. Let’s go eat and maybe get dessert later.” * * * Two weeks later, Milli flinched when her phone vibrated. She ignored it and kept decorating. Her tablemate wasn’t so tolerant. When it vibrated again, Jackson swore and reached across the table, took it out of her pocket. “You have 126 messages from Eddie. Who’s Eddie?” Her tall bestie demanded. “Edgar Rowling, that guy I saved. He wants to go to dinner. Marni put his number in my phone and gave him mine,” Milli complained.

Spending most of my morning making googly eyes at Damien when he wasn't looking, my mom's words replay in my head a lot. Watching Damien interact with his friends I realize how much he rags on them, and they wrestle a lot. One thing I don't get is how Damien and Eddie are even friends Damien is such a dick to him, but we all know Eddie deserves it so the others don't say anything. As I'm eating during lunch my phone rings and I see his name pop up in a text, opening it I read 'done watching me?' Looking up I search the lunchroom until I find him staring with a soft smile.

“Look what the cat dragged online.” Eddie's laughter filled my head and it was then I realized how much I missed my best friend. It wasn't until his avatar shot behind mine that I realized I could've died. “You're welcome,” his New York accent was everywhere. “Better watch where you're going buddy.” I chuckled. “Edwin the First! How you been bro?” “Same old, same old. You?” I hesitated and ducked to avoid a bullet. “It's been crazy up here.” “Crazier than morning sickness, doubt it.”
