He reached into his bag — past the textbook with the torn cover and the pencil case that didn't close properly and the collection of small objects he kept meaning to remove — and pulled out a drawing. Breathing hard but grinning. "To make you feel better," Karin added. She thrust a piece of paper toward me. "Because you looked sad." I took the paper. Held it up to catch the moonlight. A drawing. Crude but recognizable. Four figures holding hands beneath a smiling sun. Me. Karson. Carl. Karin. A family. "That's us," Carl explained eagerly. "See? That's you with the crown because you're a princess. And that's Dad. And that's me and Karin."

Like the puppets in the friday puppet shows at school. I locked the door behind us making sure our parents would not be able to check up on us while we are out. We walked to the glass window, it was pouring outside like the shower when it is tuned to the highest. It was like a waterfall. I started to draw something in the frost on the window. As I bent down to pick it up, I realised it had fallen open to a specific page. The illustration staring back at me held me in place like a beast with its claws in my chest. It was a drawing of a monster with long, dried-up black hair, claw-like nails, and prominent fangs. Below the drawing was a single red drop of blood, as if it were dripping from the fangs. Glen had drawn the northern woods. A square hatch. Six stick figures. One had a hat. Another had unusually large boots. Each figure carried a different symbol instead of a face. Joel smiled. "Children draw differently." Alex nodded. "No." "He wasn't drawing faces." "He was classifying them." He pointed at the figure with the hat.

When she wrestled the bag around to the front, she unzipped it and triumphantly pulled out a rather rumpled looking piece of paper. Alice looked at the drawing and this time, a single tear escaped. It trickled down her cheek before she swiped it away with the back of her hand. “Adam, look,” she said, her voice choked. “It’s us.” I took the sheet of paper. It showed a family grouping drawn in colored crayon. A stick man, a stick woman with a chaotic corona of hair holding a bundle, and a little stick child standing in front. "The what?" Aiden proudly lifted the parchment, presenting it with a triumphant flourish. It was a masterpiece of terrible stick figures. There was a tall, blocky man with a jagged golden crown, a woman wearing an oversized silver tiara, a small blob representing a little boy, a giant black dog with six legs, a glowing stick figure surrounded by yellow loops, and a final girl drawn with aggressively angry V-shaped eyebrows. Kael let out a long, dry sigh. "Let me guess. The one with the furious eyebrows is your long-lost aunt?"
