“Let me know if you need anything. I’ll be near.” I waited until she disappeared behind the swinging kitchen door before turning my full attention towards my drawing book. My awkward fumbling of the pencil stopped as I gripped it in a tight hold. Idea’s grew from the toxic darkness that lingered, the pointed tip of the lead carefully sketching a hand grasping an entwined honeysuckle and rose crown. A flower crown. A simple smile. Erasing some of the shaded blackness that colored the eyes. Yeah, I think I will color this one.

Something older. She looked at the girl, who was now drawing quietly with a piece of charcoal on a flat stone. At first, she drew trees and stars. But soon, her hand changed direction. She drew a circle — the same one from outside. Liora froze. “Where did you see that?” The girl blinked. “I don’t know. It just came into my head.” Jonathan laughed. “Looks cool! Like magic!” Liora’s voice was sharp. “Don’t touch it.”

Nicole. “Heidi…” my heart softened as I dropped to my knees beside her. “I’m gonna put them back, I promise. I just wanted mum to stay here for a while.” One of her drawings rested ont he table too, almost covered by mum’s scarf. I pulled it from under there. It wasn’t the best picture but I could tell it was two older women with a child in between them. One of the women’s hair was done with a yellow pencil while the other was black, the child had tiny dots around her head to imitate hair, but what they all had in common was the yellow circles hovering over their heads and the triangle wings.

As he open The door opens. The crying subsides. I press the crayon harder against the paper until it snaps. I stare at it for a second. Then I drop it. I don’t fix it. I don’t pick another color. I just sit there. The crying eventually stops. Of course it does. It always does when he goes in there. I look down at my drawing. It’s supposed to be the new house. I tried to draw it earlier, with the big windows and the long hallway and the stairs that make noise when you step on the third one.

So that means getting going now. Having a blank page for a commission, and getting started on it, that’s two different things. After wasting most of my free period staring at a large white rectangle, I give up and start doodling in a sketchpad instead. Sketches of faces, mostly. The Pack. Imogen. Mom. The college staff. My tutor, Mrs Bird, as a Sergeant Major in a feathery rainbow uniform, strutting around bellowing orders. Jade as a crow, teaching crow martial arts to a bunch of baby crows. Mary in a Cinderella ball gown. Reese as a tiger. Tom as a warrior fairy, with dragonfly wings and a silver rapier.

No wonder Killian couldn’t look me in the eye this morning. I reach for the sketch pad Elara left by the nightstand. My fingers tremble, but I grip the pencil like it’s my lifeline. I don’t even think, I just draw. Symbols. Circles. Eyes with fire spilling from them. A wolf with a shattered spine. A crown that burns. A clock with no hands. My hand stops only when I notice the paper trembling beneath my touch. Not from me. From the floor. A low vibration hums through the wood. Like a warning. Something is coming.

None of the adults understood. Every child appeared to accept it perfectly. Noel finally unfolded the worksheet he had ignored for most of the afternoon. He stared at it for one long moment, turned it over, and began drawing on the back. Louelita moved around the table to see. A house. The proportions were imperfect. The upstairs windows were too large, and the roofline leaned slightly to one side. The front door, however, stood open. Lamps glowed in three different places. Beside the entrance, written in heavy pencil with immense concentration, were two words:

“Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Excellent book.” He sits down and begins reading. The first picture I draw is a portrait of uncle Owen’s sister with a wolf howling at the edge of a cliff at a full moon in the background. I make one for his father too. I plan to give them these at the funeral. I do similar ones of Michael to give to Carrie and one for Zuri but with a lion for the family.

He tells me helpfully. "Yes but these are my babies. They are going to be angels." I tease him. He scoffs but follows me back to where my papers are sitting. He begins to look at all of the drawings that I have already completed. One shows just a vague outline of the outside. One shows the entire blueprint with minimal detail of the whole castle. The rest have more details but of much smaller areas of the castle.

For some reason, her instincts immediately told her this conversation wasn't as simple as it sounded. The teacher offered a small smile. "Hazel draws very well." Aurora nodded. "She loves drawing." "But after she finished..." The teacher opened a thin folder she had been carrying. Then pulled out a sheet of paper. Aurora immediately recognized the drawing. Herself. Darius. Hazel. Their house. And a dog they didn't even own. A very typical child's drawing. But there was one additional figure in the corner of the page. A man. Standing a little apart from everyone else.
