He opened his mouth. From the corner of my eye, I could see Ronan. He had not moved from his position near the entrance. He was watching both of us with an expression I could not fully read from where I stood. Something careful. Something that was not a surprise. His arms were crossed at his chest, and he was waiting for something, and from the look on his face, he already knew what it was going to be.

I could hear my own breathing, slightly heavier than before. That was when I caught the movement from the corner of my eye. Joe. He hadn’t left fully. He was standing near the entrance to the locker area, half-hidden by the row of lockers. He saw it. The hand on my face. Me not stopping it. The close distance. Everything. His expression shifted fast. Jaw locked. Eyes narrowed. He didn’t say a word. Just watched for a second longer, then turned and walked out. The door shut behind him with a heavy click.

He keeps his eyes on mine. And then, one corner of his mouth lifts. Just enough for me to catch it. ---
