~ CARAMEL'S POV The game we played with Blaze resting inside was called Corner run and I was the one in charge of it. It was a chasing game. One team was to start in one corner of a court and the other team was to start in one corner of the court furthest away. The goal was to catch one member of the other team by chasing them around the outside of the courts. And we set the time limit to 5 minutes.

My brows furrowed as I continued watching her swing her around and around until she released her, pitching her into a crowd of guys. “That’s what you get, skank!” she yelled after the girl. The silence in the room was deafening until Elliott yelled again “Aaron Wicker! Get your ass out here!” A moment passed and a beefy looking dude with short blond hair stepped out along with 3 other guys, all sporting football player muscles. Blondie sneered at Elliott, his hard face showing his obvious anger “Frost, what the fuck are you doing here?” She smiled viciously, her eyes going dark “I’m here to kick your ass as promised”

Four hours later, Cora and I stood outside Crimson Den with legs that were shaking and suddenly refused to move. The building…looking just normal and plain. Just a plain brick warehouse squatting on the edge of neutral territory—no neon signs, no velvet ropes, no bouncers in suits. Only a single red bulb glowing above a steel door like a warning light. Cora tapped my shoulder, and I jumped before turning to her. She was grinning. “How are you feeling?”

I am seriously regretting this game I started. There is nothing I can do tonight, so I slowly rise from the hard floor and dust myself off. I eat a light dinner and make a cup of hot tea. After a while, the quiet was broken by the sound of footsteps approaching the dining room. Corner entered, dressed neatly as always, and greeted everyone politely before bowing slightly. “Good evening, ma’am. Good evening, everyone,” he said respectfully. He then walked straight toward Ryder, bowing again as he reached his side. From his briefcase, he brought out a brown file and placed it carefully in front of Ryder. “Sir, I have come to return the file,” Corner said. Ryder looked up immediately, his expression changing to surprise. His brows furrowed as he stared at the file sitting on the table. It was the same one he had been searching for all morning — the file about the Snake Gang.

“I swear if you weren’t immune I would turn your penis into a shrivelled dried piece of kelp, you ignorant ingrate!” The door is flung open in force, pulling both of our attention mid battle and Cornell and Cora almost fall through it. The sight before them halting them to a shocked stop and Cora’s mouth drops open in disbelief as all colour drains from her cheeks.

The door closes and the electronic security locks slide into place. I look at the girls and as a group, they release their breath. The striking and tall black woman, who gave me the wink poolside, walks forward. “I’m Corinthia, the girls call me Cori. We’ve brought dice and score sheets for an all-night game of Zilch. You play?” “Zilch?” This is not what I expected. A movie or two, maybe. “It’s a good way to kill time and win or lose a little money. It’ll cost you about three bucks in quarters if you lose. If you win, you take home between ten and twenty. We’re high rollers and take Zilch seriously.” Her teeth flash in a genuine smile.

The only casualty was a corner that ripped. “Look what you did!” Lora fussed, brandishing the image of Enzo at her. The muscles of his chest still gleamed, but the pool background was a little worse for wear. Maybe it was just her interaction with him today, but she noticed new things about the portrait. Like the expression on his face, which she had taken for concentration and dedication, could maybe instead be barely concealed disdain. Arrogance, even. Like he was above all of this. Above being the cover story of Rolling Stone like some kind of rock star of telecommunications. He was nothing but a big jerk.
