I leaned forward, squinting into his right eyeball as he pulled the skin out of the way. “Wait,” I said, hopping up and leaning across him to access my desk drawer. I pulled out my magnifying glass and tried again. It seemed like a tiny, black speck was partially visible next to his iris, but it was really difficult to tell. A little frustrated, I put the magnifying glass down and resumed my spot on the bed.

At least not about the important things. "Haven't seen you around for awhile. Where you been hiding?" "Oh, I'm always around, Grim." "And you can't say hi?" "I am saying hi," she pointed out, and there was a note of something in it that might have been amusement or might have been something less comfortable, and he was deciding which when his attention snagged on something at the far end of the crossroads. He didn't identify what it was immediately. Just a sound, a movement in his peripheral that triggered the same instinctive tracking he applied to everything in his environment. His eyes sharpened and moved down the hallway before he caught himself and brought them back.

The red light blinked once. Just once.. soft, faint, barely there. But I saw it. I was halfway across the room, hair still damp from the shower, the morning light cutting pale slants across the carpet when something in the far corner flickered. I blinked, thinking it was my imagination. But when I moved closer.. past the sleek shelves in Ryan’s walk-in closet, past the drawers only he touched.. it blinked again. I crouched. A small black circle, embedded in the corner wall trim just behind the third shoe shelf.

From the way he glared at me, one could tell that he knew what I was doing. I stared at him again with that glance of disgust but this time he didn’t bat an eye or glance back at me. He acted like he wasn’t seeing me so I continued with my hideous mock. “Why are you staring at me as if I had been irritating you?” He said without looking at me. How did he make out what I was doing when he wasn’t even looking in my direction? I wondered. “You must be wondering how I could tell what you were doing without looking at you. I have only one eye but that eye is extremely sharp. I was able to—”

When he was done, I asked him, “Really?” He then nodded with a confident look, grinning at me. “Then I shouldn’t be worrying, Alpha.” I stated, with a relief that he was that considerate. He smiled at me, making me look down timidly. He folded his arms before placing a finger on his chin questionably. Looking up through a corner of my eye, I noticed he was staring at me. Perhaps, I had something in my eye. My hands reached for my eye, checking if there was anything there. But I didn’t find anything. Next was the second eye but I also did not find anything. Then what could he be staring at?

It was a dream! My heart raced like a gazelle's on a run, I squinted, trying to adjust to the darkness in the room, when I noticed something move from the corner of my eyes. A shadow who stood by the side of my bed. From my peripheral vision, I watched it move till it stood before me.

I crossed the yard. He noticed the approach the way someone notices movement at the edge of their vision, a slight shift in attention, head turning with the automatic awareness and his eyes found me across the remaining distance between us. And for a single, suspended moment, one breath, maybe two, something moved across his expression.

Momentarily, Alexander would give me a glance and a smirk but I made sure to give him nothing but a stoic expression in return-payback for not allowing me help them. Suddenly, I caught sight of a movement at the corner of my eyes. I quickly whipped my head in the direction of the movement but it was gone just as fast as it had come.

The doctor and his parents rushed in. She remained far in the corner as he opened his eyes for she knew he wouldn't want to see her. His unfocused eyes jumped from people to people searching and finally rested on her. They lingered on her more than they should. The woman standing in corner. Little did she know she was his first thought.
