He spared me a glance while sitting in the extreme corner bench in the last row across the wall adjacent to a window, looking outside however, he did not wish me back. “I promise not to go overboard next time.” Looking at her closely, he noticed that her mask was a bit messy on her cheek side. Out of respect, he was about to fix it for her only to see something. He narrowed his sight on the skin under her eye and he was not seeing things. There was indeed a scar. It was not really visible but if one looks at it closely, it could be seen. Thinking that it was not really that big of a deal, he just shrugged it off and drifted off to sleep.

There was no expression on his face, as usual, so I couldn’t tell what was going on in his mind. His dark gaze was fixed on me, unblinking, as if trying to see right through me. Sure. But somewhere around the tenth fall, I noticed something. His eyes. He’d been rubbing at them earlier, blinking more than usual. At first, I’d thought it was just the glare of the lights, but now… now I wasn’t so sure. When I tugged the blindfold off between drills, I caught it. The faint redness at the corners. The way his gaze darted, sharp for a second, then slipping, unfocused, like the world wasn’t holding still for him.

The one that wasn't quite nothing and wasn't quite everything and lived somewhere in the space between them. The corner of his mouth moved. Just slightly. Just enough. That smile. The real one. Brief and quiet and completely changing his face. He looked at me for one more second. Then he turned toward the door. His hand found the handle. And then he stopped. Didn't leave. Just stopped, hand on the handle, his back to me. The corridor was quiet. The room was quiet. Everything quiet. He turned around. And looked at me with those steady hazel eyes that always seemed to be seeing slightly more than whatever was directly in front of them.

I kept my head down but from the corner of my eye I saw Alan push his chair back and stand up. He was coming after me.
