He looked back at the person standing in the corner. Elaine followed his gaze and saw a tall figure in the corner, about 1.8 meters tall, wrapped in a black cloak, with both hands behind his back and a black mask on his face, revealing only a pair of eyes. He suddenly looked at Elaine, his eyes as deep as a well. Elaine's heart chilled, and she quickly turned her face away. Her sudden movement caused the fruit knife to cut her face again, and the pain made her draw a sharp breath. The left side of her cheek was wet with blood. She must have been cut quite deeply.

But just then, he froze. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of something lying on the sand, a dark shape where it shouldn’t be. He turned his head, his eyes narrowing and his stomach twisting before he approached. Perhaps it was just a washed-up object or some human trash. Nonetheless, he moved toward it, feeling something rise in his chest.

I pointed out at the car parked faraway while I called to his attention. “Why does he have to pack that far? I can’t see a thing from here?” He spoke with a squinted eyes, as if trying to see into the car. He even went as far as raising a shield up with his palm over his eyes to grant himself a better sight at seeing into the far point of an image.

He just let his gaze slide to the screen from the corner of his eye. His brows then furrowed.

I can't quite see the color though, so I tilt my head to the side to get a little bit more view, and then his eyes open. ... And find me staring at him.

He actually obeyed, easing away. I pressed my eye closer to the glass, vision blurring at the edges. What a dick.

It was more like… the lights had gone out behind his eyes. I slowed, and for a second I considered pretending I hadn’t noticed. That would be the safest option. That’s what most people do when they see someone looking like that, look away so they don’t have to carry it. But he’d looked cornered last night. And I knew what it felt like to be tired in a way that wasn’t fixed by sleep. So I cleared my throat gently. “Hey.” His eyes blinked, like he was coming back from somewhere far away. He straightened too fast, like he’d been caught doing something wrong.

Then slowly, he glanced over his shoulder and their eyes met across the distance.

Not obviously. The way I watched everything I was not supposed to be watching. With the peripheral attention of a man who had decided that looking directly at something was too much of an admission so he had trained himself to see it from the edge of his vision instead. It had not been working for some time now. I looked at her.

I searched around the place for him with my eyes and then I saw him seated alone at a corner. Just then he looked up looking at my direction as if he had sensed my presence and our eyes met. I walked slowly towards him, my eyes not leaving his face.
