Lena stood a few feet away, her expression unreadable through the heat distortion. "Focus, Ember," she called. "Pull it back inside. Contain it."
Ember closed her eyes, her breath coming in short, sharp pants. The light beneath her skin began to recede, drawing back into her core like the tide returning to the sea. The temperature in the warehouse dropped degree by degree, though the metal pipes overhead still glowed red.
When she opened her eyes again, they were still shot through with gold, but the multiple voices had faded from her speech. "We're bound," she said simply. "Across time. Death. Rebirth."
