This wasn't supposed to be fun. Quaid drew a gasp from my lips and an almost giggle. He creaked as he moved, tall, broad-shouldered body sheathed in metal. But this was no full plate armor like I'd seen in movies, a flowing, liquid armor that fit him perfectly, moving easily as he did, the helmet topped by a flowing white plume, a shield strapped to his left arm and a sword on his hip. "I feel like an idiot," he growled. I resisted the urge Shaylee had to blow him a kiss. What was wrong with her?

Heat surges through my body, and for the first time, I’m aware of the crown floating above my head with colored spires glowing brightly. “Do you like our force field?” I pull the shield from my back. The action causes thin quills to grow from the harness and weave themselves around my body until they form a short protective dress made from the lightweight metal feathers of Hedone’s Stymphalian birds. Spaulders made of the Colchian dragon spread over my shoulders. As the body armor tightens to fit me, I roll my shoulders, grab the sword out of the compass rose, and take a defensive stance.

His scream had not even finished before his body was sent flying into the wall. The thug holding the dagger tried to attack again. Arka caught his wrist, and the dagger clattered onto the floor. The man's body was spun around before being hurled into two other thugs. All three crashed to the ground together. Arka was no longer holding back. He was no ordinary bodyguard anymore. He was the former combat commander of the Garuda Fang Unit. His movements were brutal, fast, and lethal. In less than a minute, every thug was lying on the ground.

Their guns sprayed liquid fire made of ink. “The script must be clean,” they chanted, “mistakes must burn.” The Author snatched a handful of papers from her desk. “Sorry for this,” she whispered. She tossed the pages into the air. > “In a world of steam and iron, the Doctor became a metal warrior…” Suddenly, the office transformed. Brass pipes lined the walls. Maya’s clothes thickened into copper armor, a steam cannon grew from her arm. > “In a world of magic, the Soul became a storm…”

I behead another crawler, my eyes blazing as I feel my thigh tingle as my mark surfaces, making the crawlers hiss as they shrivel back. I summon forward my power, gasping when I feel the crown on my head, and the shield that now appears strapped to my arm. I raise my arm, my hair whipping across my face as three crawlers slam into it before they shriek and jump away. I spin, jumping forward before kicking one of them. My armour is impressive and flexible. I can feel the power in the shoes, the way they adapt to any terrain, the way that the fabric itself is armour, even the crawlers are unable to rip the fabric. Science at its finest.

Some kind of military armor? He holds it up for me. “You will wear this under your clothes at all times.” “What is it?” “Body armor,” Caleb says. “It will protect you from knifes and bullets to the chest.” I accept it from him and nearly drop it, having not expected the weight. “Caleb, I don’t know how I’ll be able to hide this under my clothes.” The vest was so bulky that only my loosest fitting clothes might somewhat hide the harsh angles of the vest. Even then, I wasn’t sure.

Dora watched as the smaller ship landed in the docking area. Four men got out in completely black armoured gear with as many weapons as would fit on a body. They confidently strode up to the door. It was impenetrable. In the master suite of the bunker, Zara stood in front of a full-length mirror. She wasn't wearing her usual corporate blazers. She was wearing a gown designed for a shadow-cartel masquerade. It was a masterpiece of midnight-black velvet, clinging perfectly to her curves, with a plunging neckline and a dramatic slit up the thigh. Hidden seamlessly within the lining of the velvet was a layer of carbon-nanotube armor, capable of stopping a high-caliber bullet.

Her oversized dark shades blocked her eyes, but I could still feel the dagger she was throwing at me. I sighed, getting up. “How could you? I thought I was your best friend. But nooo,” she flailed dramatically, “I had to find out on the freaking internet,” she emphasized the word like it had personally betrayed her. “That my best friend’s bodyguard is actually a billionaire. And not annnyy billionaire but freaking Nikolai Dorne”
