It's not a pure audiobook in the traditional sense—more like an audio drama with a single, unreliable narrator. It definitely scratches that futuristic itch, though the pacing can be a bit slow if you're just after constant action.

So the first thing that pops into my head is 'Infinite' by Jeremy Robinson, which isn't maybe what everyone else would say. It's got this crazy premise where the MC gets stuck in a simulation meant to stretch a human lifespan into an infinite one, and the world-building shifts from deep-space sci-fi to bizarre fantasy realms. I know, I know, it's progression fantasy first, but the sacred arts system and the iteration of worlds feel so tactile and rule-based that reading it gives me that same locked-in sensation as a good VRMMO. You learn the magic alongside the characters, layer by layer. It's less about goggles and headsets and more about the psychological immersion of being in a place with consistent, exploitable laws. That's the kind of immersion that sticks with me.

I keep circling back to 'Altered Carbon' even though it's not strictly an ebook about VR—more about digitized consciousness. But the psychological ripple effects are there, the disorientation of being resleeved into a new body feels adjacent to a full dive experience. The protagonist's detachment and identity crises mirror what I'd imagine from prolonged immersion.

For something more directly about VR ebooks, I stumbled on 'The Uploaded' by Ferrett Steinmetz. It's a satirical take where people upload their minds to avoid death, living in a virtual afterlife. The psychological angle is less about horror and more about absurd bureaucracy and digital class divides, which honestly felt refreshingly bleak in its own way.
