Crossovers with 'Fullmetal Alchemist' are such a wild ride because the alchemy system blends so uniquely with other universes. One of my favorites is a fusion with 'Harry Potter' where Ed ends at Hogwarts—imagine him tearing apart the magical theory behind wands and demanding equivalent exchange from Dumbledore! The author nailed his voice, especially how he'd scoff at 'cheating' magic. Another gem pairs FMA with 'Attack on Titan'; the Elrics in the Survey Corps just fits, with alchemy offering creative solutions against Titans. The pacing in that one was intense, almost like the original manga's urgency.

Then there’s a lesser-known one crossing over with 'Doctor Who.' The TARDIS lands in Resembool, and the Doctor’s nonchalance about alchemy drives Ed up the wall. It’s got that perfect balance of humor and existential dread when they confront the Homunculi. What I love is how these stories explore Ed’s rigidity—he’s a scientist in worlds that defy his rules, and watching him adapt (or refuse to) is pure gold.

Most lists just cover the obvious crossovers with stuff like 'Attack on Titan' or 'My Hero Academia', which are fine but a little predictable. I've always thought the natural fit is 'Fullmetal Alchemist' and 'Doctor Who'. The central themes about the cost of progress, the price of knowledge, and violating natural laws align so perfectly. The Time Lords' non-interference policy versus the Elric brothers' relentless, messy intervention could spark incredible conflict.

Imagine the Doctor trying to prevent Ed from performing human transmutation, not by force, but by showing him the web of time. Or a Weeping Angel in Central Command, feeding on the potential energy of alchemists. It writes itself. Most people go for shonen action crossovers, but the philosophical and sci-fi horror potential here is criminally underused. I'd read a whole series of that.

I keep coming back to 'Fullmetal Alchemist' crossed with 'The Magnus Archives'. It shouldn't work on paper—hard military alchemy meets slow-burn cosmic horror podcasts—but the thematic overlap on bodies, sacrifice, and forbidden knowledge is ridiculous. Jon Sims archiving the Truth behind the Gate, or Martin stumbling into Resembool, writes itself.

For a pairing, I’ve seen some authors pit Edward against a Leitner, which is just a hilarious mismatch of stubbornness. More interesting is the idea of the Distortion (Helen) interacting with Alphonse’s armored form; both are about bodies that aren't what they seem, but from wildly different angles. The tone clash forces writers to get creative with pacing, which usually weeds out the lazy fics.

You end up with stories that are less about flashy fights and more about existential dread seeping into Amestris’s very structured world. The best one I found had Roy Mustang navigating the Buried during the Ishvalan War, which added a whole new layer of claustrophobic guilt to his fire alchemy. It’s a niche within a niche, but when it clicks, it’s unlike anything else on the shelf.
