Feral Claim
The night air slapped my face, filling my lungs until I nearly choked on the freedom.
And then—
A flash of white darted between the trees. The puppy’s tail.
Relief poured through me. “There you are!”
I bolted after it, barefoot, the ground biting at my soles, branches scratching my arms. The pup kept darting ahead, just out of reach, its playful yips pushing me deeper into the woods.
“Wait!” My laugh was breathless, a little wild, as I chased it.
Finally, finally, I caught it and scooped it up, clutching it to my chest, pressing frantic kisses to its soft fur. “Don’t you ever do that again. Do you hear me? Don’t you ever—”
