Reluctantly, Ares dropped the chunk of fur into my palm. “What is it, then? If it isn’t black?” Cendres cocked his head at me. I grinned. “It’s sable.” “And?” Cendres was being even slower than usual. Everyone ignored him again. “Are you sure?” asked Ares, snatching the fur back from me. “Hold it up to the light. It’s got brown undertones.” “Can someone please explain what this means,” Cendres groaned. “I don’t get it.”

Anne only replied to Jack's words with a glimpse of a smile. Out of Anne's expectation, when they arrived, it turned out that they were not alone. There were about twenty people there. Instead of feeling happy and safe, Anne felt scared and wanted to run away. The reason was because those people wore black robes with pointed hoods that almost covered half of their faces. From their posture, Anne could guess that they were men and women. Lighting torches were planted all around them. And the center of Anne's attention was a giant stone in the shape of an owl.

I shut my eyes off several times, tight-shut and not just swift blinks, in order to accustom myself to what is in front of me. It’s silver! The color of those fluffy furs is metallic silver with a golden mane around the neck that looks like a necklace and with white stockings at the base of its paws. Its head is enormous, gorgeous, and magnificent. It looks like Amaltheo somehow, but something doesn’t feel right. It’s on defense mode, standing gallantry in between me and the sleeping lady who I assume is Allyssa. There couldn’t be another anyway.

I drop onto all fours, my massive paws sinking into the soft earth. Betty walks straight into my space. She doesn't hesitate. She doesn't show a hint of fear. Long, slender arms extended from the darkness, ending in hands with elongated, razor-sharp fingers—claws ready to seize their prey. Across his body, thick, dark fur shifted as if alive, radiating an aura of dread and terror. A black hood covered his head, concealing any trace of a face or identity; only shadows danced beneath the fabric, revealing the absence of eyes, a mouth, or any human features.

Who was it? I closed my eyes and, just like that, I could see her. It was as if my mind had somehow made space for her, opening up and giving her the space she needed. Her fur was bright red, like leaves in fall. She had black paws and a white-tipped tail that swished happily from side to side. But it was those amber eyes that caught me by surprise. They sparkled with intelligence and mischief in a way that felt strangely familiar. But… It was a fox!
