’ she scolded herself. When she reached the waiting men, Gabriel pulled her veil up over her head. She looked up at him with a shy smile. He didn’t return it. Instead, his gaze burned through her, incinerating every drop of blood and bone inside her body. As if they were already in bed. The mayor began to speak, but his accented words faded into the background. The de Angelis disappeared. So did Ravaiarina Island, along with its magic. There was only Gabriel. His heat. His fire.

Something was wrong. Honorera didn't know what it was, but Gabriel was different. He had a dark and stormy expression, and he was distracted all the time. She couldn’t help but ask herself, had she done something wrong? Or perhaps he had simply grown tired of her? Whatever the reason, she felt the change deeply and keenly, and it scared her. Whatever small progress she had made at being more confident shriveled away, and she felt herself shrinking back into her old shell.

“We are sorry to barge into your home this way, but we really have come from a far place, and we just want to know if we are in the right place.” She dropped her bag, moved her pot to give it a stir, and turned to give us the most discomforting look I have ever seen. I looked away from her eyes, scared that she might see my fear. “Nicolas and Gabriella,” she began, sending an undeniable wave of shock down our spine. “Two people destined to meet each other. A blessing, and a curse. A blessing to whom she chooses to be a blessing to, and a curse to whom she chooses to be a curse to.”

Gabriel asked when he finally came to his senses. 'Seriously! You want my opinion now after getting me this heated?' Selena thought in embarrassment. Gabriel took Selena silent as an answer, so he released his hands off her. He then walked a few distances away from Selena and started unbuttoning his shirt to get changed into his pajamas. Once Gabriel's shirt dropped off his body, he felt a soft and tender hand tracing the scar mark on his back. "I won't hold back this time." Gabriel said. He turned around to face Selena, and she didn't know why when it's about Gabriel, her head and her heart gets all messed up even if she's angry at him.

“You told me Lucien destroyed our family.” Gabriel swallowed. “That was also the story.” Seraphina stared at him. “Then tell me the truth.” Gabriel picked up the recorder. His hands were shaking. “I should have told you ten years ago.” “Yes.” “I should have protected you.” “Yes.” “I should have stopped your father.” Seraphina’s eyes hardened. “Stopped him from doing what?” Gabriel looked down. “He created the first Black Veil sequence.” Silence. Seraphina felt the room tilt.

“Show her.” My breath hitched. “Show me what?” I whispered. Gabriel hesitated. Just for a second. Then he lowered the bag he had been holding onto the concrete floor and unzipped it. A slim laptop slid out into his hands. He moved with a kind of careful focus adjusting his glasses up his nose. He opened the screen. I stood there, frozen, as his fingers flew across the keyboard. It wasn’t anything I could recognize. Lines of code. A dark interface. Small windows opening and closing too fast for my eyes to follow. Then a video file appeared.

“Nikolai.” Gabriel’s sharp voice cut through my distraction. I looked up to find him studying me with those calculating gray eyes that missed nothing. “What’s wrong?” he asked bluntly. “Nothing,” I said automatically. “Just tired.” “Bullshit.” Gabriel leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms. “You’ve been spacing out for the last ten minutes. I could have told you we were planning to burn down the Vatican and you would have nodded along.” Despite everything, I almost smiled at that. Gabriel had always been direct to the point of brutality. It was one of the things I respected about him.

Gabriel didn’t respond. For the first time, he wasn’t so sure.

Now was not the time to succumb to despair. "That's... that's absurd," I managed to choke out, my voice quaking with a mixture of anger and disbelief. "We can't carry on like this, Gabriel. None of it makes sense. None of it." However, as the words left my lips, I detected a shift in Gabriel's eyes, a darkness that seemed to consume him. It was a facet of him I had never witnessed, a side that sent shivers cascading down my spine.
