A woman standing beside Gabriel. Gabriel stared at it for several seconds. "I never wanted this," he whispered. He closed the file. Then his phone received another message. Dexter knows about the photograph. Gabriel's expression changed. He immediately called Dexter. No answer. He tried again. Still nothing. Gabriel looked toward the window. Someone was watching him from across the street. He reached for his jacket. But before he could leave, his phone buzzed one final time. If you tell Dexter the truth, Selena will be next.

Gabriel's POV Back in college, I got into trouble—I beat up a girl for bullying me relentlessly. I thought it was justified—a moment of righteous anger. But then she turned out to be the mayor’s daughter, and my world crumbled. Luke was the one I called when I felt the walls closing in. He didn’t hesitate. He silenced her permanently. That one act became the first domino in the series of events that landed him in prison.

“I’ll try not to take offense at how surprised you sound.” She rolled her eyes. “I just didn’t expect… this.” He studied her for a moment, then reached out picking a strand of hair behind her ear. The gesture was so intimate, so unexpected, that she froze. Gabriel’s voice was low when he spoke. “For what it’s worth, I don’t think love is the problem. I think the wrong people make it feel that way.” Her heart clenched. Because part of her wanted to believe him.

A laugh I once thought was warm, now sounded cold. "Gabriel told you, huh? I thought he would. You know, I really liked you. One of them announced his arrival in a soft voice. Gabriel pushed the door open. He entered quietly and shut it behind him. Anna, sitting at the long dining table, lifted her head in surprise. “Son, what are you doing here? You just got back. You should be resting.” Gabriel didn't give a reply, but his eyes swept across the room. His brothers and their families were not there. Only his grandfather Alfred, his father John, and his mother Anna. He gave a polite greeting first to his grandfather and to his father, then his gaze finally locked on his mother. He wanted to speak, but before he could open his mouth, Alfred’s commanding voice cut through the air.

He took a few glances at her, smiled, and said, “Hey, you’re quite pretty. If Mr. Chase wasn’t asking for you, I’d love to spend some time with you.” “F*ck you!” Shirley glared at Gabriel ferociously. She angrily said, “Lackey of Internal Affairs’ Chase Gardner, let me tell you this. I’d rather sleep with a dog than a man like you. You’re disgusting.” Gabriel flew into a great rage and said, “You’re quite the talker. You think you’re capable huh? You should learn that your destiny is within my control now. If I want you to die at three o’clock, you won’t live until five!

“With Renz out of the picture, things will be normal again. Once he’s gone—there’s no escaping Malachi’s grasp anyway.” My heart stopped. The words sank in, breaking me. I took a shaky breath and leaned closer. “I’ll be on my way right now." he added, sounding almost cheerful. “Wouldn’t miss his last ride for anything.” The call ended with a click, and before I could move, the door swung open. Gabriel stopped—his eyes narrowing when he saw me. “What are you doing here? Are you stalking me?” he hissed. “I—” My voice shook as I reached for his hand. “Please… take me with you.”

Tired of waiting. Gabriel is collecting books at the altar, his profile carved out in stained glass colors. His movements are automatic and careful. He always looks careful. I think about how his hands shook, just a little, when he touched me the night of the storm. I want to see that again. I want to see him lose control, just once, even if it means losing everything else. I cross the aisle, my heels quiet on the ancient stones. He doesn’t hear me until I’m almost on him. When he turns, surprise flashes in his eyes, followed by something darker. He looks tired, but he’s still beautiful in a way that has nothing to do with God.

She stared at him coldly, in the same way she had looked at my mother. “What do you want?” she growled at him. Gabriel calmly raised his hand to show he did not mean anything bad. “Relax hun.” “You don’t get to call me that!!” she yelled. She looked as if she was considering biting his head off. Something was not right here. I did not expect everything to be smooth and lovely. Gabriel had abandoned his family because he did not have the spine to do what was right. He had left them alone for fifteen years and had appeared out of the blue on the day that her mother died. She wasn’t expected to sing kumbaya while holding hands and gazing at the sunset.
