Shapes shifted around, too many to count, silhouettes with rifles cradled like babies.
Hundreds of them, maybe more, ghosts stitched into the night. My pulse hammered, but I kept my breathing slow, even. One wrong twitch and I’d be a stain on the gravel.
No arguments, and no hesitation. I leaned in, let the scanner bathe my face in crimson. A soft chime, then green light flared. My name burned across the screen in stark white letters.
