“Be careful, Leila. You are still weak. Do not strain yourself.”
I let his concern wash over me, hiding the truth: I needed every ache and strain. I would not be weak again. “Thank you,” I said softly. “I will heed your counsel.”
By the time I reached the training yard, the sun was climbing, and a gray mist hovered over the grass. Warriors lined up in neat rows with spears and swords, shields strapped to their arms. At the far end of the yard stood my trainer, Captain Caelen: tall, dark-haired, eyes hard but fair. He glanced at me, curiosity flickering in his gaze, as though he doubted a courtly lady could master the blade. I kept my head high and met his eye.
