I’m not one to allow people close to me physically or mentally, but I didn’t feel the need to push him away as his intentions didn't seem malicious. Alex stood, turning to a graying man with a crooked grin— Jamie Torres, his badge read. “I’m Alex, new transfer,” he said, offering a nod. “Jamie, detective,” the man replied, sinking into a chair. “You’re on the Romano case?” Alex nodded. “Yeah. Looking for an edge.” Jamie’s eyes softened. “Watch your back, son. Those bastards are dangerous. Been in this city for years, dodging every trap. Power buys them out, and they trample on anyone in their way.” Alex’s fist clenched. “I’ll prove they’re not above the law.”

Romano's hand flew up to her mouth. "Oh my, w-what is that?" Antonio abruptly stood up and stomped one foot onto the chair. "That's a mark of the mafia. A friend of mine who used to be in the mafia told me only members who've spilled blood earn a scar like that." Spittle flying, he pointed at my nose and cursed, "Enzo Moretti, you'd better come clean—have you done time before? Did you get that scar in a mob fight?" I frowned and pulled my sleeve down to cover the scar.

They had me for two weeks or three, I don't know. I escaped and some people dropped me in town." I tried to keep some out of the story but she read between the lines like always. "Your dating a gang member, aren't you?" She smirked. "Yes. His name's bran."

Iker ran a hand through his hair, visibly frustrated. "What makes you believe in his protection after his own men almost killed you?" Lizzy hugged herself, and her voice cracked. "The contract..." "Lizzy, do you really think Greed will keep his end of the deal? You must remember that he's a gangster, and not just any gangster, but the leader of the most powerful mafia in New York. Trusting him wholeheartedly, based solely on a contract that he could break at any moment, is complete madness." And she knew it. It was complete madness to trust someone so dangerous. But even if he broke his word, she wouldn't break hers to protect herself and her child.
