Move on. I should've gone downstairs. Made tea. Avoided him entirely. But something pulled me toward the sound of running water. Maybe it was masochism. We paused for a breath, and I asked him. "Is this why you have all these cameras installed around this room?" I looked around, pointing my chin at every direction where the cameras were installed—one in the ceiling. I don't know how he managed to place it there securely. Another was by the foot of the bed, secured in a vertical bar with its end to the ceiling and floor. Two cameras were on its tripod on both side drawers next to the bed. "What is this room? Our studio or something?" I asked Chad, still tittering.

Marcello stared at him for another second before disappearing down the short hallway leading back toward the bedroom. For a moment, there was only the faint retching of the woman in his bathroom. “This one belong to one of your guests?” Marc had returned. It was almost delicate compared to everything else in the room. At the end of it was a small pendant shaped like a narrow shard of glass frozen into a flowering metal. It reflected the light in all its uneven angles when it moved. He held the thin silver chain dangling between two fingers and a jacket over his other arm. “Would be a shame to leave it lying around,” he went on. “They don’t usually come back for their things.”

I gently push my fingers against the cracks and ridges hoping I can break down the drywall without causing too much commotion. I’ve been working on the ceiling in the closet for over an hour and I realize that someone might return to take my food tray or bring the socks that I requested. I quietly jump down off the stool and rush into the bedroom. I grab the tray off the bed and set it next to the door. Then I walk into the bathroom and grab several large towels out of the closet. I quickly work to arrange them on the bed to look like a person sleeping and take care to fully cover them with the comforter.

Just something to sleep in and a casual outfit for tomorrow. "I like your room," he chuckles. "It's really.....personal," he admits, looking around. "I like things that spark joy," I whisper, and he chuckles. "I'll go get my toiletries, back in a second." I grab the stuff I need for the night out of the drawers in the bathroom, filling a small travel bag with necessities. I walk back into my bedroom, and I see him sitting on my bed, spinning Kent's plastic handcuffs around his finger. I feel my face flush instantly, and he clears his throat.
