Standing before the obsidian throne was not a monster of smoke and shadow, but a man. Elder Garrow stood with his back to us, his massive grey frame distorted by the black ice that had fused with his fur. His eyes, when he turned to face us, were no longer the amber of a wolf; they were pits of lightless grey, identical to the "Mirror-Elara" I had destroyed weeks ago.

I had to know what this journal contained. I heard the rapid, heavy footsteps of Garth returning outside the tent flap. I had seconds. I quickly snatched the journal and the silver object, dropping them both into the deep pocket of my tunic. I forced the key back out of the lock, slammed the lid down, and kicked the chest back under the shelf with one swift movement. I was standing, straightening my tunic, when Garth appeared. "Luna, I'm sorry, they were restocking the cook tent. I only found this one—" He held out a small, copper tin of common tea leaves.

​The Ninth Peak did not feel like a conqueror. It felt like a corpse. The silver engine had gone cold, its internal mechanisms seizing up as the last of the mercury and amber resonance bled into the debris of the High Archive. The Iron Grove, once the glowing lungs of the University, had turned a brittle, ashy grey. Without the Great Hammer’s heartbeat, the very air in the corridors grew thin and tasted of ancient dust.

I growled. Roran stepped inside, his expression grim. Behind him came two warriors carrying a battered wooden chest between them. The old iron lock was half-broken, as though it had been pried open by force. “We raided one of Garrick’s supply caches near the border,” Roran said. “Found this hidden beneath the grain stores.” I rose to my feet, crossing the room in three long strides. The chest was old, the wood darkened by age. Strange markings were etched along the sides — symbols I didn’t recognize, though they stirred something uneasy in my gut.

Whoosh! A gust of wind blew through, forcing open an already loose window. The curtains danced with filthy, stained sheets. Thud. A diary fell to the ground. Stone shelves curved beneath the infirmary, holding tally rods, sealed ledgers, salt stores, and wrapped foundation stones labeled by place. It was an operations archive, not a shrine. One label made the lantern flame bend toward it. Myrathis Road. Karl saw it too. “Do not touch that yet.”

Eden said feeling determined, let's see how long that lasts. Eden headed back to the agency and unlocked the office, opening Malakai’s password. Now the real question being, what the hell was the password? It could literally be anything, Malakai was such a closed off person, and his passwords could range from anything. So first she tried the basic ones. His birthday. Nope. Eden’s birthday. Nope. Lilith’s birthday. Nope. the date of the fire. Nope. the date of his parents' deaths. Nope. What was left? Nothing. She tried a bunch of random numbers and letters but Malakai was smarter than that.

Zareth warned, shining her light along the damp walls while the stones above us groaned with a loud cracking sound, "did you find an exit yet?" "Not yet," I replied, shining my torch along the back wall behind a tapestry hanging from a hook, and I pulled the fabric down, revealing a rusted maintenance hatch set into the stone, "over here, help me push this open." Zareth rushed over and pressed her hands against the metal plate while I jammed the tip of my sword into the crack to use as a lever, and we both pushed with all our strength until the hinges popped with a loud squeak and the hatch swung open.

I sent a guard to deliver it. I felt a weight lift from my shoulders. Not long after, the door opened. It was not Magnus. It was Elder Hrothgar. He did not look like a man of peace. He carried a heavy, leather-bound book. He placed it on the table in front of me. "What is this?" I asked. "It is a record." Hrothgar said. He opened the pages. "This book records all the offerings you, Alpha Stone has collected from the Blackwood Kingdom over the last five years."

He probably thought that he had nothing to worry about since there were mostly kids in here. When I opened it, I noticed that it was having just a single book and I brought it out only to find a logo on it. Yes. It was the logo that Garrett had been working on and I smiled. I scanned through it and there were lots of writings, dates and even coordinates in it. I smiled as I started wondering what my brothers would think of me now if they could see me. They would all be awestruck by my awesomeness and I would have had the very last laugh.
