CHAPTER FIVE: DANGEROUS GAMES SERAPHINA’S POV My footsteps and my heartbeat were one right now, racing with lust, fear, and guilt. Coach Marcus kissed me. I hurried down the road, not daring to look back to see if he followed me. The giant gears began to slowly rotate, their heavy brass teeth scraping together with a deafening, metallic shriek that sent a shower of bright spark-embers across the stone.

“Impossible.” We stepped outside into the sunlight. Workers rebuilt walls, children played with sticks, and somewhere, someone was loudly reading Lethan’s dramatic monologue about “The Tragic Commander.” Warren flinched. “Is that supposed to be me?” he asked. “Yes,” I said. “And I believe chapter four includes you brooding for twelve pages.” He groaned. “Please burn it.” “No,” I said. “It’s good leverage.” “You wouldn’t.” I smiled. “Oh, Warren. What makes you think I wouldn’t?”
