He knew this was how life was going to be. Haven walked up to the front of the house. She went to the door and turned on the lights in the front of the house at the same time. She then unlocked the door and opened it enough that the car down the road could see it was open. She looked around and down to the ground, where there was a rock there. She looked at it, but she couldn’t see anything on it. She knew it was a warning of some sort. She closed the door and then left the nights on. She knew they wanted to hide in the darkness. She was going to make them have to be seen by any of her nosey neighbors if they wanted to play all night. All the floodlights on her house were now on.

it rasped, its voice a mechanical croak. Anya hesitated, a war raging within her. Could she trust this stranger, this outcast from society? Yet, what options did she have? "Yes," she finally whispered, her voice hoarse. The figure extended a skeletal hand, revealing a small, crumpled piece of paper. "Ghost wants to see you," it said, its voice barely audible. "Abandoned Warehouse, District 13. Midnight." Anya's heart pounded. "Ghost?" The cyber beggar cackled, a sound devoid of mirth. "Don't ask me. Just follow the instructions, if you know what's good for you." With that, it shuffled back into the shadows, leaving Anya alone with the weight of the message.

I yawned lazily in front of him. “Mom said you were to come home till later”. I opened the door wide. “I forgot some documents “. He answered, staring at me like he saw something. “Found it? “Yeah, I left it in the car, and was halfway home before realizing “. He explained further. “For some serious reason, our next-door neighbor was looking at me like she saw a ghost”. “Oh”. I swallow hard, my heart racing. “Will leave now, have to check on you before leaving “.

Gideon lets out a barking laugh but doesn’t say anything about the bed or the collection of whips and things on the floor. Ghost is standing right outside of the bedroom door; he’s so close that Gideon almost slams into him, but Ghost seems completely unbothered. He’s got a massive smile on his face and he’s holding out a velvet blue box while looking directly at me. “Glow worms shouldn’t be this happy.” I mutter, which only makes Ghost smile more and Gideon laugh a little as he steps to the side. I watch in horror as Ghost drops to one knee, holds up the little velvet box and bows his head so low I can see the back of his pale neck.

The only sound is the hum of the refrigerator and the occasional creak from the old hardwood floors. I slip outside and pull the door closed behind me. The cold air immediately brushes against my skin. Okay. That actually helps. A little. I take a slow breath and look out across the neighborhood. Most of the houses are dark. Streetlights cast pale pools of light across the sidewalks. Everything feels calm. Still. Peaceful. Then I notice someone sitting on the porch next door. Of course. Because apparently the universe hates me. Cole. For a second neither of us says anything.

Worst of all, knowing those three hooded figures were still standing outside the estate like lifeless gargoyles made my skin crawl. If I was going to successfully do this, I couldn't stay here. I couldn't risk my dad walking in and catching me turning into the exact monster he was terrified of. Standing up on shaky knees, I crept over to the window. I peeked through a tiny slit in the heavy curtains and looked down. They hadn't moved. Taking a deep breath to steady my racing pulse, I slipped out of my room and made my way down the dark back staircase. I quietly unlocked the heavy glass doors leading to the patio and stepped out into the cool night air.

"I heard your rent is suspiciously cheap. There isn't some problem with this place, is there?" I said evenly, "It's great. It's bright and spacious, and the neighbors are nice." He let out a theatrical laugh. "Neighbors? Do you even dare step out of this place in the middle of the night? I heard someone died here, you know." He was clearly just here to laugh at me. I couldn't be bothered, so I turned to close the door. Unexpectedly, he slipped inside before I could act. "Come on, don't be so quick to kick me out. I was kind enough to come all the way here to check on you. What's with that attitude?" Rick sneered.

“Who’s this so earl- her expression went pale as Alan’s tall, well-built figure was standing with a fruit basket held in one of his hands. His veiny arm strained from the weight while he had a small smile. “Good mor- On impulse, Gia slammed the door shut, backing away with a flustered expression. “I’m seeing ghosts now?!” She coughed a sharp laugh, shaking her head as she headed back to her room. The knock sounded again. “It’s rude to keep a neighbor out here in the cold. I’m just here to talk.” Alan’s masculine voice called out and Gia’s eyes widened with her hands flying over her mouth. He’s really alive? What happened to his words of preferring to die than sleep with her last night?

No signs of life and the air feels hollow, abandoned. I step out of the car slowly, tension coiling in my chest. The property looks untouched, like no one’s been here for weeks. No. No, No, No. Gino said the caretaker; Gurtej, lived next door. Supposed to watch over the place in exchange for free rent. I head for the small house beside the cabin and knock, harder than I mean to. A little girl answers, rubbing her eyes in cartoon-printed pajamas. “Hi, sweetheart,” I say gently, crouching down so I don’t tower over her. “Is your mommy or daddy home?”

I call ghost, he got more than one skill, and opening closed-door virtual and real ones are one of his many skills. He uses his key locks tools and messes with the door for a bit until it opens. Finally, I walk down with ghost behind me, I find a small girl laying naked on the floor. She's thin, too thin, her blond hair match mine only hers is dirty and matted on her head. Her blue eyes are hardly open, I can see bruises all over her fragile body. Taking off my shirt I cover her quickly and pick her up leaving this hell behind. "You're safe now baby sister" I whisper in her ears she closes her eyes letting darkness take her.
