"How well did you sleep here at the VetClinic?" Chester asked me. I briefly glanced at him while I cleaned up the mess on the table, and he carefully administered insulin to Getty, a female Pomeranian with diabetes mellitus. Getty was taken care of by Manang Adel, one of the oldest residents in Agoncillo, Batangas. She owned the repair shops in our area. "Boss, I slept quite well because there are no ghosts," I joked, making him laugh.

“I have spent my whole life in the dark. I am done.” My mother pressed her palm to her chest, as if trying to steady her own breathing. “A phantom wolf,” she forced out, “has no true form.” I stared at her, confused. “What do you mean no true form?” “It… it projects,” she said, voice trembling. “It projects from its owner’s body. It isn’t like a normal wolf, skin and fur and bone. It’s… energy. Spirit. Power.” My throat tightened. “And it can…” I swallowed. “It can still fight?”

My mom had been captured by rogues for the sole purpose of using and abusing the red wolf’s power, and Grey was determined that it would never happen again. ‘I can’t make any promises.’ Grey replied. She let out a yowl and fell forward, and then a gale of wind swept past, lifted her skirt, and exposed her under— There was no underwear at all, actually. Instead, it revealed four sticks tied to the Pomeranian’s legs, hiding behind a long white sheet. The darkness of the night had managed to hide the dog’s shadow behind the sheet. It had a long, wooden candle holder in its mouth with a piece of green LED light on either side, which were the eyes on the ghost’s chest. Finally—and just as ridiculously—there was a phone bound to the dog’s tail, where a video of a ghost screaming played in a loop. “Give it back! Give my head back!”

“Here’s your killer, Chief. Look at this fucker! Goddamn monster!” He jangled the dog’s body at us as he talked. It looked like a German Shepherd. Maybe a mix with something else. It was big but still had to be a quarter of the size of what I’d seen by the Skoger place. “Caught this fucker out behind the Pamida. Bill Crenshaw’s wife said she’d seen it up round the high school last couple days with a mangy look. Sonofabitch must’ve been rabid and gone after poor ole Pete.”

Well, I'm not bragging but when it comes to good looks his shithead is nothing compared to my ass, I mean how much more if it was my face as a basis of comparison? I don't know what it is but for some reason, I felt a sense of responsibility to the poor innocent lives, so I snap my fingers and summon my hellhounds. They are my loyal pets. “Who we are does not matter, what matters is that the Wolves will die tonight!” Zephyr huffed, produced out his sword, and quickly sprinted towards him. “Ha! Do you not know where you are? I am Ghost! You will not be spared tonight!” he replied. Seeing Zephyr rush over, Ghost steadied himself. “Wolf’s Howl!” Ghost howled, with that the attack started. Even though he looked barbaric and unruly, he was very careful. Seeing how many of his men had been slaughtered, even if he did not know who Zephyr was, he knew he was formidable.

He wolfed it down, then looked up at me with expectant eyes, ready for playtime. I spent the next few hours with Ghost. We played fetch in the vast, empty garden – he was surprisingly fast for such tiny legs. I tried to teach him to sit, which mostly ended with him nipping playfully at my fingers and rolling onto his back for belly rubs. He was a handful, but he was also a happy, goofy presence that made me laugh more than I had in years. He was a good distraction from the heavier thoughts that still tried to sneak into my mind.

I’ve seen him in the training grounds but he’s damn good at what he does so he never needed any one-to-one training. "Thanks, Ghost.” Gideon mutters, I don’t mean to laugh but that's exactly what happens. Ghost has to be one of the whitest men I’ve ever seen; his hair is practically white and his eyes have a sort of redness to them that can’t be natural so I can see why his momma called him Ghost but it's still a weird name. “It's a funnier name if you know that my momma has skin like sweet caramel sauce and my pops was blacker than the fuckin’ night sky.” Ghost smirks at me, he’s not offended by my laughing, which means he can take a joke.
