By the time Miranda sat at the small table, she had up to ten books piled on the wooden surface. "Now, let's start with The Legends of the Wolfe, then we'll read Creatures of the Moon, Myths Versus Facts, then we can go from there." The ghost coached.

The Bridge especially.” Tamara moved to the nearest shelf. The books whispered as she passed, like they recognized her. “This one,” the ghost said, pulling out a book that looked like a piece of the night sky. “Start here.” Tamara opened it. The words weren't English. Weren't any language she knew. But she understood them.

“Doubt keeps you alive.” He reached for a book from the nearest shelf and flipped it open. The pages were blank. “Do you know why my library has no dust?” I shook my head. “Because the books breathe,” he said. “They exhale what others forget.” He offered the book to me. The pages shifted—faint outlines forming, fading, forming again. Names, dates, a line of ink that moved like a pulse: Evelyn Blackthorne arrived under a waning moon. I slammed it shut. “You’re writing my story.”

“So what was so important you forgot about breakfast?” “You are,” I answered, and though he looked taken aback, he remained silent. Usually, he’d take the opportunity to flirt and try to say impressive words, but right now, he just watched me. Then I told him everything that had happened last night at the bookstore and how I ended up with the books in my hand. “So you saw a ghost?” he asked with narrowed brows. I shrugged. “I don’t know what I saw, but the woman that gave me these from the store didn’t exist according to the salesgirls, and these books that the woman brought from their store didn’t belong to them.”

I am so curious of trying to read the title of the book I just took from the bench that I did not notice him going inside the room. Is he a ghost? Why did he turn up suddenly? I am so startled of his presence that I let go of the book and it fell with an echoing thud. His words continuously ringing on my ear as I gawk, “What the fuck?" Oh, what does that mean?
